As this has been the most requested movie since the launch of their suggestion site, Rifftrax wants to riff the 1998 Godzilla LIVE!!! They are shooting to riff this in August if they can reach their $100,000 goal. Sony apparently has already given their permission if they could raise the fundage.
Even if they can't raise the money, hell, I'd love just to have a commentary for the riff player for it!

I grinned ear to ear. I thought about them doing a live show to this movie last year when they did the Twilight kickstarter, and thought it would be the perfect one to do in wake of the new movie. Looks like great minds think alike.
They're already halfway to their goal and I haven't even contributed yet. I imagine this'll be a cakewalk fundraiser.

Am I reading that right - they're already to $75,000 after just a few hours? That's nuts.

The Twilight Kickstarter filled out just as fast (maybe faster). So I'm not entirely surprised. I'm curious if they can top that final total personally.

That's impressive. I didn't follow the Twilight effort so I guess I didn't realize what to expect.

One thing that worries me is if Toho has or will sign off on this. Remember that "Zilla" has appeared in the Toho cannon as of Final Wars. So part of me wonders if this could happen.

It feels I'm given the impression from the Kickstarter that they were given this number by the studios involved, unlike Twilight where they negotiated after the Kickstarter had started. Since the price they're asking for is significantly higher than the Twilight Kickstarter, I'm assuming this includes the amount they'd need to pay Toho as well.
If not, it's possible Toho can put a halt to it for using the Godzilla name, though since the film itself is legally owned by TriStar they might not have much say about it.
It could go either way. Rights are tricky business, but I'm under the assumption that its been pre-approved pending the success of the Kickstarter. And since the number lies slightly under their goal right now, I think this is happening.

Yes, I assume that they packaged this up before they went live with the kickstarter. Fully funded when I checked.

Well, 29 days to go and they've already got almost nine-thousand dollars more than they requested. Time to find out how much they'll make in the coming month with this kind of rocket start.

Sony can do whatever they want with it, as Toho has washed their hands of it. I'm sure that Rifftrax asked the Toho question before they launched the Kickstarter.

Sony can do whatever they want with it, as Toho has washed their hands of it. This statement is not accurate. Toho still manages the film in Japan, and whether or not they mock it today with throwaway lines in GMK or G98's cameo in Final Wars (which were inclusions of the production crew, not the company itself) it's still a film that's a part of their Godzilla legacy and they treat it as such, even giving it a blu-ray release this year. Whether or not they approved of the final product is moot, because they have the brand name of Godzilla copyrighted and any possible use of it without their permission is a violation of it, and the film is most certainly stamped with that brand name. And they are very protective of it.

And they are very protective of it. I believe it is still the highest grossing Godzilla movie ever made. I hated it, but it's still better made than any Japanese Godzilla movie, except perhaps the first one (note I say perhaps intentionally -- that movie has a rep of being a great and serious film that I think is at least partly hogwash). Emmerich makes silly movies for feebleminded people, but the Japanese G movies are so appalling that 98 Godzilla still looks like Citizen Kane in comparison. By the way, I write all of the above as a serious G-fan, who has sat through some truly brain-numbing experiences as a result.
