Okay, a number of my friends went to Gen-Con this year, and as we do every year the next month is dedicated to playing through all the new board games and card games that we found by going to this convention. I want to give a shout out to a weird game called Discount Salmon.
This game may be one of the best things I've ever seen. You can set it up, play it, and be done in less than five minutes, so it's the kind of card game that I see people playing really quickly between classes or during lunch breaks. Basically, you've got two decks. One is a polluted lake (scattered over a table randomly) that gets turned over to reveal all these fish that have problems (toxic, ugly, dry, stinky, and not a fish (a tire)). The other deck is dealt to players, and gives things that lets you resolve the fish problems (like lotion for the dry fish, or a fish costume for the not a fish.) The first player to cure the fish wins. Beware, though: some fish have multiple problems, and some other cards let other players add more problems (like the heat of the sun to make a fish dry again).
The person with the most fish at the end wins by virtue of being able to make the biggest profit as a fishmonger.
The game is weirdly frantic and... honestly, I don't know how to explain how fun this game was. Just... just go look for it. It's a great game.
