I was watching IT Lives by Night. A lot of people comment about what a terrible Sheriff the Michael Pataki charachter was. But here's the thing: What did he do in the movie that was so bad? I don't remember him doing anything wrong. He (correctly) believes that the lead guy is the murderer and he tries to stop him from killing again. What exactly made him such a corrupt sheriff? I mean compared to the sheriffs in Squirm and Master Ninja I, This guy's a saint. Can someone explain why he was such a bad sheriff?

My guess is, that he was a bit pervy with Mrs. Whateverhernamewas. He kind of eyed her when she answered the motel room door in her nighty. But you can't hang a guy for that, I guess.

Well, there's Gene Roth who, according to Joel, is "the sheriff in everything", which I really think is true sometimes, at least in classic '50s "B" horror and sci-fi. He basically plays the same kind of grumpy, irascible character in every picture.
As well as Gene Roth nails the type, though, my favorite MSTied movie sheriff would have to be Alan Hale Jr., who plays a sheriff in The Crawling Hand and Giant Spider Invasion -- the first time, pre-Gilligan, entirely serious and straight and the second time, as his career was circling the drain, completely tongue-in-cheek, basically playing the Skipper playing a sheriff.

I like to think that Alan Hale Jr.'s actually the same character. In The Crawling Hand he figured he could handle most anything that'd come his way in this new gig, and then Giant Spiders come along. Also, nice use of "irascible." That word needs to come up more often.

I might be mistaken, but I think there might be a scene in "It Lives By Night" that was cut for the show where the Sheriff gets fresh with Mrs. WereBat. Can anyone confirm this?
An equally bad sheriff would be the one from "Squirm", who's pretty unconcerned with all the odd stuff going on in his town, and doesn't even try to investigate. On the other hand, for a nonMSTed good example, there's Lt. Dave from the original "The Blob"(which I'll be seeing again at next month's BlobFest), who listens calmly to the account of the "teens" and makes sensible decisions.

It's been a while since I've seen Squirm, so I can't comment on the sheriff in that picture, but I'll bet he's small potatoes compared to the sheriff in Blood Waters Of Dr. Z. Jeezus, what a nasty, stupid old cracker.

I might be mistaken, but I think there might be a scene in "It Lives By Night" that was cut for the show where the Sheriff gets fresh with Mrs. WereBat. Can anyone confirm this? I watched parts of the unMSTed version of the film on Youtube, (WHAT? DON'T JUDGE ME) and I can confirm that. When Johnny ran off with the ambulance and hid out, there was a scene where Mrs. Werebat was despairing, wandering around the streets at night. The sheriff pulled up next to her and told her that she shouldn't wander around town all night. He then offered to give her a ride back to her hotel. This part was actually not bad at all in this respect. It was a decent thing for him to do. But once they got there, it got weird. He took her key from her so he could open the room door for her, and then invited himself in. He tossed his hat on the floor/bed/somewhere, poured himself a drink and asked Mrs. Werebat if Johnny had ever hit her. She got very distraught, telling him that Johnny never hit her and he'd never kill anyone, and broke down crying. The sheriff started comforting her in a very squicky fashion by running his hands through her hair. He told her that he wanted to help her, and then started to kiss her. She resisted but he kept at it until she started screaming. He told her that he was the only guy who could save her husband. She told him to leave, and he said, in a very creepy fashion, that he was going to find her husband, with the suggestion that he would kill Johnny when he found him. It was gross and off-putting, but at the very least it was a scene that made the sheriff villainous. It's preferable to presuming we're supposed to dislike him because he wasn't sympathetic enough to the protagonist who was killing people in his psychotic episodes.
