Did Trace ever give a reason why he left the show?

Not sure. He may have made plans to move on before they knew it was going to be renewed on Sci-Fi.

I'd always heard that he just wanted to move on to other things in his career. And, honestly, I can get that; he'd been doing that gig for over half a decade at that point. It's good to keep diversifying one's work in show biz.
Having said that, I don't know that he's ever confirmed this oft-suspected reason, so I could be way off base.

My memory isn't perfect, but I'm certain Trace made the announcement he was leaving MST3K after it was announced Sci-Fi Channel was picking up the series. As for why Trace left, I believe it was stated that while making MST3K: The Movie, Trace had become acquainted with a few producers in LA who offered him some writing jobs. Also, it had come to light some years ago that Trace wanted Jim Mallon to help produce a a TV project, and Mallon refused, wanting to focus all the company's budget on MST3K.

He and Mike got drunk and made out at a party during season seven. It made going to work too awkward so he just bowed out.

Welp, I now have an OTP. Mike and Trace. I honestly did hear that he left because of how MST the movie turned out. I could be wrong, though.

This year at Gen-Con he described a lot of scenes that they just couldn't get in because they were told "Yeah, make it big budget" followed by "What? No, keep it simple, like the show." I love how The Movie turned out, but I can see some disappointment about not being able to make it with everything they wanted.

Watching the deleted "storm shelter" host segment is pretty damning, because it's clear The Brains put A LOT of hard work into it, only for it to be cut out by thoughtless execs.

You know, it's weird... after all this time, I still forget that most MST3K stuff is available on YouTube. A part of me still wants to wait to see them until I can buy a DVD or something with a special feature, but... I may just go take a look for these.

There's a lot of reasons:
1) Losing Joel, then Frank. Trace and Frank in particular are very close friends, so the show simply wasn't the same for Trace after Frank left.
2) The bickering between Joel and Jim, which caused Joel to leave the show and Jim to assume all creative credit for the show and the movie. There isn't much love between Jim and the rest of the cast, especially since Jim makes the lion's share of the royalties.
3) Trace was also just tired of movie riffing for a while. He said that the ending of The Incredible Melting Man was so depressing that he was done with the show.

I hadn't heard that, but I could understand it. The ending of that movie was grim, if I recall properly. ...also, that's gotta be a weird mark for a movie in a meta sort of way. "The movie that made Dr. Forester's experiment so successful that Dr. Forester died."
