What were you like on August 8, 1999, when the final episode of MST3K aired? Did you cry?

I was 11, it was a sunday. so while it was recording on vhs in our living room, i was watching it in my bedroom with the volume low enough to get away with it on a school night, using a pillow to stifle my laughs. Came home from school the next day and watched it with the family. As a young movie nerd, i was very surprised that they used a mario bava movie (freaking black sunday has been a long time favorite) featuring the music of ennio morricone.

I didn't know about it on the exact day since I didn't get cable until about five months after they switched to just showing reruns of Giant Spider Invasion MST3K on Saturday morning. I will admit, though, that when I saw the final episode it made me choke up a bit.
I mean, I already knew that they were into reruns, but it still kinda stung, ya know?

I was empty inside. A former shell of myself. Well, not really...

Well, at that time, I was only 6 years old (but I had started to watch the show via many episodes my dad recorded on scotch video tapes during the Comedy Central era in between 1991 and 1995 when I was about 5 1/2), and I think it was probably around 1999 when I noticed the show was on the sci-fi channel. The show airing its final episode that day was something I was completely unaware of, so it was just a normal day for me that day. but I was disappointed when the sci-fi channel stopped showing reruns on January 31, 2004. (I was 11 at this point). The episode did have an emotional feel to it - especially how they put that little "joke" after the Satellite of Love crashes and it shows the blank white screen with an instrumental piece of "Who will I kill" playing, making viewers assume "Oh god, I hope they didn't die..." until Cambot moves back revealing it to be a magazine Servo is reading, because it shows everyone has moved on and live happily ever after still watching bad movies. (Too bad Gypsy couldn't join them, though).

I was resigned to its fate.
With Joel, Trace, and Frank gone, one cancellation under its belt, and a completely new set of Mads during the Sci-Fi era run, the changes were enough for me to easily imagine an ending was coming. Which it ultimately did.

i was mostly pissed. when i was introduced to mst3k, they were on comedy central, which my cable company did not offer CC. by the time i did get it, the show moved to the sci-fi channel. again, which i did not get. a friend of mine that did would record a few shows to fill up a vhs tape and give to me. then i finally was offered sci-fi and could at last watch it every week. then, only a couple of months later, i saw the promo for the final show. i can still remember yelling "noooooooo!" at the tv screen.
i recorded the final ep and watched some of it before going to bed, as i had to be at work early the next day. i finished watching it when i got home and i did get a little teary, especially at the song they did together about returning to earth. then i thankfully found this place and sky, who helped me obtain many copies of shows i'd missed.

What were you like on August 8, 1999, when the final episode of MST3K aired? Did you cry? I didn't get all weepy or drama-queeny or anything; I was just like, "ahh, crap". I kept watching when it went into re-runs and enjoy it, but I'd remember there weren't going to be any more new ones and I'd be like, "ahh, crap".

By the time it reached the finale, I felt it had run its course. It was certainly bittersweet, but I'm glad they got to end the story properly. Riffing-wise, I never really cared for the episode, but the overall story ending was well-done. It wouldn't be until a year or two later that I realized how much I missed the show.

I was sad but not weepy, even though it sucked partly because it was the day before my birthday. I do remember how and when I found out they were moving to SciFi in the first place. I wasn't on-line yet and wouldn't be for another five years so I hadn't even heard any rumors. I was in a car coming home from taking a stadium tour of Lambeau Field and the Packer HOF as a summer day trip with my Mom, who passed away a year ago, when the news came over the radio. I kind of scared her by clapping and whooping, which probably wasn't a good thing to do since she was driving. So I was somewhere in Wisconsin on Highway 151.

I was a big fan during the original airings in high school and college. Upon graduation in '96, I lost cable and lost touch with the show. On 8/8/99, I was in a hotel in Minneapolis (of all places), having a series of gigs there that weekend. I flipped on the TV in my room and saw the familiar shadowrama and Largo from "Thunderball" on a big yacht. I watched with excitement at my luck of re-discovering my favorite show...until the final host segment when I realized I was watching the series finale.
I didn't track down the show online until 2003.

This all pretty much sums up how I felt about it at the time. "And now, the hollow feeling that follows any puppet show." (521)

I remember it was in August, and it was just after my birthday. I had just turned 15. I remember watching being depressed that it was the final episode and I was determined to keep it for prosperity. It was the first episode I taped.
That's about all I remember from it.
