You kids today with your Game of Thrones (AKA fantasy based soap opera with more graphic sex and literal backstabbing opposed to figurative), Walking Dead (AKA road to nowhere with SHOCKING DEATH TWIST OUT OF NOWHERE THAT ALWAYS HAPPENS BUT SURPRISES US FOR SOME REASON), and Breaking Bad (AKA Bryan Cranston Grumbly Voice: The Series), but I remember the days where all that was enough to keep us hooked each episode was seeing where the latest iteration of the Starship Enterprise ventures to and the constant goings on in the space station Deep Space Nine.
But not Voyager. F*** Voyager.
Talk of the seventh (including the animated series) show has been going on for a while, but details have been scarce. We don't even know who the crew is yet. But at Comic Con they gave us a good look at the new Starship, the Discovery...
Personally I'm digging the angular design. But this trailer tells us more than you'd expect. Check out the number on the hull, NCC-1031. As far as Starships go, it pre-dates Kirk's Enterprise, but was made after the ill-fated Kelvin from the recent series. But at Comic Con they confirmed this series will take place in the original timeline and not the alternate reality of the recent blockbusters, in a desire to separate the films and TV shows.
So, what I can say for certain is that this takes place in the 23rd century, so it's going to be long before Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager and long after Enterprise. This also alludes it's a prequel to the original series, but it's possible it could be an older ship active around the same time. But it looks shiny and new, so that's probably unlikely.
But if they're doing a prequel, it's a shame they aren't doing it in the era of the Romulan War and the birth of the Federation. Enterprise was building to it, but never had a chance to get there. I'm curious as to where we'll see the Discovery take this franchise.
