In seasons 0-7 (inclusive), the SOL has a distinctive sound effect that plays in the background of most if not all scenes taking place on the ship's bridge. Does anyone know where this sound comes from or what was used to make it? It's a low rumbling sound with occasional mechanical noises such as whirring and pinging sounds (not really sure how else to describe them). It can be heard quite clearly during the pilot tape's title card: www.youtube.com/watch?v=48-kAKf80OU

I've seen similar topics before, though don't know if we yet have a concrete answer. My guess is that, this show being the display of Practical Effects Wizardry that it is, they might have just recorded some general ambient machine noises and then added a few synthesized effects and other more distinctive "tech" noises to the list for good measure.
Seasons 8 through 10 have some sort of ambient effect as well, but it's definitely a change.

I believe that it's a sound effect off of a stock sound effect tape or CD.
The "Observer noise" was also used in 511-Gunslinger for Dr. F's Scanner Planner, which makes me think most of their "noises" are stock effects.

Being an old video production guy, the "base" sound is lot like what older camcorder microphones I've used do when there's too much wind, as when shooting out the window of a moving car. (You could probably aim a fan at a microphone and get a similar effect.) What the electronic beeps and warbles are from, I have no idea. Maybe a hand held electronic game of the era? The KTMA SOL bridge console is actually an electronic Name That Tune Game, but I don't know what sounds it makes.
I imagine the background noises of the Discovery in 2001: A Space Odyssey were an inspiration for the SOL sound.

Another good place to get a clean sound of this? The ancient (and often cut from most fan-copies and definitely from most official ones) season 1 & 2 Best Brains end card before they started using stingers. If you have an old copy that includes the "Comedy Channel" logo (not replaced with the Comedy Central's presentation card), it goes on even longer there.

Most season 2 episodes with the "Comedy Channel" logo I thankfully still have on tape (and captured digitially). but I think you're better off just using the opening for the Green Slime pilot for the sound effect.
