Is anyone else really disappointed so far with the camerawork during the SOL bridge segments?
I'm only through episode 2, but it's very distractingly bad.
The camera comes out from the hallway, positions itself 6 feet away from Jonah and the bots, and locks into position as a static, still shot. It doesn't move, it doesn't zoom, it just sits at a straight-on angle to the action, and then zooms back in for movie sign. I don't think it even shakes for movie sign, but I'm not sure.
Its hard to get to know these characters of I have to squint to see them. Zoom in! Get intimate! Especially zoom in on those stupid lasercut monsters and stuff you're obviously so proud of, we need detail!
WTF? Did Cambot have a stroke? Am I alone on this?
And another thing, the new SOL bridge is soooo plain and unintersting. No windows, no Hexfield, nothing but unintersting, vague shapes on the walls. It doesn't even curve up, it just ends right above the doors (per the behind the scenes footage). We have widescreen, give us something to look at!
Thoughts?

No I absolutely agree with you. I've only been able to see the first episode but it's my biggest gripe with the new show (that and the subpar puppetry, but maybe it will correct itself over time)
The bridge is very boring and flat, and the angle at which is shot doesn't help. It's straight, too eye-level at Jonah and the bots. In the previous years, it was slightly looking-down at them (and in the later seasons, a jib made it easy to shoot from any angle on the set).
Fortunately, most of my nitpicks from the 1st episode are technical rather than "emotional". The cast and the writing are great, riffs are top notch, the chemistry between the performers, etc. But the actual sets and cinematography are underwhelming. The models looked very nice though!

With all the resources they have, it's kind of weird that fans making episodes out of their own pockets can build a more interesting SOL bridge.

If MST3K gets a 12 season (which I really hope it does) then I honestly hope the redo the SOL set from scratch, and hopefully make it something that has more the the charm of past versions. I also agree that how it's shot really doesn't look great, it only accentuates the issues the issues of the set design. On the other hand I actually quite like the set design for the Mads lair, so honestly I really think that's something about the new episodes that don't need changing. However even that tends to be pretty flatly shot, which is a shame because it really doesn't do a good set the justice it deserves.
Hopefully these issues can be amended in the shows future, because with all the show does right I don't wanna be too picky. However there are things about the overall production that could be improved upon.

Yes, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I do like the new show, but ((very) oddly), it almost seems cheap in some of the production, which is funny. It's like it's not cheap in cost, but cheap in ideas? I dunno. I totally agree though, I've said in other threads, I think the bland set with the static straight camera angle makes it look to me like its not real and they're just using green screen. Also agree that we now have HD and widescreen, and yet there's nothing new to look at?!
It's also been mentioned on here and I totally agree that I don't like the handheld camera for the mads, and also sadly--no dutch angle! (that's the term for the camera tilt they used to do all through CC era, but kind of went away from in SciFi)

Yeah the new set is super-cheap looking, plain, and the segments are shot from an angle that is too low. It's weird because the other sets are fine and clever, and the tunnel sequence is cool as well.

Agreed. I almost hate to use the phrase "cheap-looking" because the old sets were so, well, cheap -- but they were visually interesting. This new set looks like a more colorful version of the lame season one set.

I am amazed they don't vary the camera angles or do any zooming in. It's like it was shot on a webcam. It's a minor complaint, but more surprising than anything (especially considering the creative talent/$ going in to it). The SOL set design is okay.. it doesn't live up to the classic SOL bridge but it works. I really like the Moon 13 set and the new SOL doorway sequence is AWESOME.

Only zoom I've seen happen so far was a zoom out once in the Mads' set.....forget which episode and it was but I was surprised to actually see camera movement for once! As much as I give Joel credit for making this a worthy revival, his direction needs a great deal of work because it's very very flat and makes the host segments less visually appealing then the ones of old. It's certainly not a deal breaker but I hope he learns from it in season 12, and uses more lively angles when filming next season.......also a new SOL set!

I absolutely agree that the new bridge set is boring and plain. Moon 13 is really fun and has a lot going on and the new doorway sequence is fantastic which makes the bridge look even more dull. It's only lit with one color and the doodads on the wall looks to uniform. Overall, I am very happy with the new eps but I do hope they will make some changes to the bridge set if they make any more eps.

They have their new 3D printer and laser cutter and damned if they're not going to use it. The simple shapes with little variance for the set don't work. There's no sense of scale. I've seen people wonder if it's a miniature comped in. I, too, miss there being found items.
Speaking of camera work, I'm not a fan of the handheld in the Mads segments. It's distracting. Mel Brooks said "comedy is bright", and I'll paraphrase and say "comedy is steady".

Has anyone noticed like a camera shake during sol host segments? It's subtle but it's like the camera used is not on good stand/ tripod? Or someone heavy walks across the nearby floor. I don't know what the term for the correct (used in cc/ sci Fi era) is but it's almost like they are using a poor quality shoulder mounted something.
Again it's just a technical issue. Having watched 9.5 issues I really do like it and can now better differentiate between services and Jonah.

Well, I've got my s11 discs finally, but yadda yadda so I haven't been to watch them yet. My only comment at this point is to mention that it was Trace Beaulieu who did most of the set design in the original series, and maybe what you are noticing is his absence? I myself wouldn't let a change of aesthetic bother me too much, unless it really had problems. Maybe Kinga hired a Minimalist? As to the cinematography… Again, I haven't seen s11 yet, so this is really a wild guess. Maybe, when they rebuilt Cambot, they used a bad motivator. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hbp41_vlX0
