Did you vote for Hillary Clinton or did you vote against Trump?

Okay, maybe a straightforward poll would have been more... straightforward. But what I'm getting at is there seems to be two type of MSTies: Ones that think Manos is a great episodes and ones that merely believe the episode's fame has to do with the movie being so bad. One is conceptually more important than the other. So, which is it?

Certainly overrated... But a wonderful episode.

Like all of the best episodes, it is a combination of a movie being bad in good ways and the talents of the MST3K team.

A great episode. When they redid it for Rifftrax I was pretty paranoid but they make wonderful bookends of the gold standard for MST!
Mike, we're actively falling off the cliff now, seconds 'til impact!

good (but not great) episode, bad movie (in a fascinating way) I'd have to say that I agree with this. I can honestly say it is one of the episodes I revisit the least. While I do not, in any way, consider it one of the worst episodes ever, I also don;t think it's one of the best. It is just so bleak that I have a hard time with it, which is ironic because I love the Coleman Francis "trilogy". I know that probably makes absolutely no sense whatsoever but....well there it is.

I think Monster a Go-Go or The Castle of Fu Manchu are the worst films on there but Manos is a train wreck of a film. you cant just turn away.

This is one of my favorites. It's hard to judge an episode you've seen so many times, one could just be sick of it. I'm going by my reaction when I saw it for the first time. It was early on in my experience with MST3K and I know a lot of people have said that this episode isn't for "newbies". I, personally, thoroughly enjoyed the ep as a whole and laughed quite a bit throughout. It pretty much cemented my being a big fan of the show.
"DO something! Gaaahhhh!"

Manos will forever be one of my all time favorites, but I cringe when I see Netflix listing it as episode one of classic MST3K. It's a terrible, terrible episode to start with in my experience. Manos is a true clusterf**k of a movie. Maybe not THE worst they've shown (for me that's Castle of Fu Manchu, ugh), but freaking up there. And worst of all, it's tedious. It's padded. It's a horror movie with no real monster besides Torgo, little "gore", zero deaths besides a dog offscreen, and no real attempts at scares. When Joel shouts "Do something! Gahhh!", that's exactly what the audience is feeling.
When I first saw it I'd had the benefit of having seen at over a season's worth of episodes, and I was already hooked on the show, but a few times I've tried to introduce people to MST3K by showing them Manos, because of my love for it, only for them to walk away hating the show. It's simply too awful to start a person on unless they already love terrible movies, and even then maybe not. It was only when I finally convinced them to give it another try with another episode (usually Pod People), that they'd grow to like it. With that said, once you're hooked, you're used to the Joel era, and you're ready to see some of the worst they've shown, it's a must see.

I think a lot of the movies/episodes I see as top picks are incredibly overrated for the most part, but 'Manos' is usually the one that stands out as properly placed. Sure it's also overrated but it's still a standout episode for several reasons. Not just because it's such a horrible movie - 'Monster-A-Go-Go' and 'Beast of Yucca Flats' seem to get by on that point alone in such lists - but because the riffing is almost perfect. The host segments are above average and the 2nd part of 'Hired!' is among the best shorts in the series.
Now there certainly are lulls in 'Manos' but nowhere near as extended as they are for 'Beast of Yucca Flats' and Torgo gives so much more for J&TBs to work with as opposed to anything Tor Johnson ever was (for my money he was best in the preceding 'Bride of the Monster'). The thighmaster insult to Torgo's apparently disfigured legs will rule forever.
'Manos' deserves its place among the Classics

Can't vote on this. The choices are not mutually exclusive. Manos is clearly both.

I love the film unironically, even without MST's treatment. I absolutely adore the regional horror movies of the "drive-in" years (late 50s through early 80s) made by local yokels outside of the LA/Hollywood or New York systems.
