Hello, all. Long time no talk.
I have a question!
There is an episode in which Mike Nelson makes this "this is the only thing mankind has ever done well" in one or another movie, in response to a scene of missiles being deployed on these launching platforms, maybe to fight Gamera or some such. The implication being that humanity's only ever been good at war, i think.
Does anybody remember what episode this was? If there's a Jane's Defense subscriber out there who knows what kind of missiles those were, that'd be even cooler.
I pay in tickets to the circus.
Thanks!

That'll be the big flurry of stock footage that ends the Invasion of the Neptune Men! (01.23.58 on the DVD)

Just like walking in new fallen snow, I'm only typing in here because this is a new thread.

Invasion of the Neptune Men is one of those stealth hits of the series, I think. Maybe I've got rose colored glasses on, but while the plot itself is forgettable (especially so close on the heels of Prince of Space) it's got so many great little moments like this one.

It's funny how everyone's threshold for pain can be so different. For me, Prince of Space is one of the all-time greats, but I found Invasion of the Neptune Men to be almost unbearable.

I find the theater segments of Prince of Space and Invasion of the Neptune Men pretty much unbearable. The host segments in those episodes, by comparison, are sheer gold!

Totally agree. Up there with Fu Manchu and Hamlet for sheer unwatchableness. I don't know. I've found for the really bad movies they've done, at some point watching it I just simply think or exclaim with sheer incredulity "They f*cking MADE this!" It might take a couple viewings, but it always happens. At that point, the episode's hilarious for me. There's isn't an extraordinarily terrible movie they've done where I don't love the episode. EDIT: I don't know if in my exclamation above whether a question mark, an exclamation point or an interrobang would be most appropriate.

For me, no matter how bad the movie is, it still needs to offer something of value -- anything -- if I'm going to invest ninety minutes of my time.
Once again, this all comes down to personal taste and interpretation.
For instance, Bix Dugen's antihero character made The Girl on Lover's Lane infinitely more bearable. Bloodlust relied on the tried-and-true "Most Dangerous Game" formula to keep me engaged. Tormented offered spooky atmosphere and a good supernatural revenge angle to offset its obvious weaknesses.
And so on.
Otherwise, the riffing needs to be nothing short of laughing-out-loud hilarious. A few mere chuckles here and there won't be nearly enough to counteract the deep, deep hurting that the Mads savaged upon us week after week.
But if a movie defeats me on all fronts? Sorry, I'm outta there. Neptune Men is a case in point. Clearly, your constitution is stronger than mine is this regard, and for that, I salute you, brother. 😁

I just find the people calling Neptune Men "unbearable" or "unwatchable" really funny. That movie is so f'ing easy to watch for me.

I guess I should have said Prince of Space and Neptune Men aren't so much unbearable, that's the wrong word. I can sit through the episodes, no problem. I just think the movies are dull and not very funny in the first place.

This is very interesting to me. I guess I'm exactly the opposite. This is not referring to any specific episode whatsoever, but For me, I generally prefer the terrible movies to the more watchable ones. It always kind of bothered me when I watch the (non MST) better movies like Mole People or Revenge Of The Creature, and think about John Agar refusing to act, or that The Creature's got "great washboard abs..." The terrible movies I'm never going to watch anyway without the wisecracks.
