Ah, the tape hits on Rhino's the Dead Talk Back, I don't have the SHOUT release, so I don't know if that is an improvement, but I've held onto my homemade copy, and to this day, watch that instead of the commercially released disc.
Aside from the tape hits, this was a rock-solid volume, with Monster A-Go Go the cream of the crop. I know, Hobgoblins - it's good, but I didn't like it as much as many fans do.
#1. Monster A-Go Go (ranked 14th in my Top 100) #2. Dead Talk Back (#81 overall) #3. Phantom Planet (#100) #4. Hobgoblins

Yes! Finally a set that I can properly talk about since I own it! I do enjoy this set of episodes. This is the only Rhino set that I (currently) own and I bought it solely for the Season 9 episodes. It was a goal of mine to own episodes from Seasons 3, 7 and 9, but due to both lack of money, life and Susan Hart getting in the way, I gave up on that goal. Since this was my first Rhino set and having experienced how Shout! Factory does their DVD menus, I was taken aback by how the menus looked. They were great fun, nice and jazzy too (especially Monster A-Go Go's), plus a SCENE SELECTION?!
Now for the episodes themselves, and I'll be honest, if there was any episode that I bought this set for, it was Hobgoblins. The quality of that episode looked alright when I last saw it, though some have said that there was a saturation problem. Honestly, I didn't notice it, it wasn't on the level of Time Chasers and especially Rhino's Merlin transfer. The Phantom Planet was a new one for me when I first got this set and I enjoyed that one too. The transfer there was also alright. I didn't notice any flaws or tape hits. Monster A-Go Go was a nice transfer, though I haven't checked it in a long while. I didn't watch The Dead Talk Back, but could you blame me? The transfer of it was awful from just clips of it alone. Apparently Shout! had a better transfer but only just. The hits are still noticeable.
As for episodes, Monster A-Go Go wins the best out of this set. Next for me would be probably a tie between the two Season 9 episodes. I really can't decide. Last is The Dead Talk Back, maybe it would move higher up if I saw it with an off air recording.

Hobgoblins for the win, it's too strong here in this set. I would give Monster A Go Go a solid second and I'm frankly surprised at the #1 votes. I really enjoyed the first part of the movie but it starts to run out of gas when the later filmed material comes in and really runs out of gas with the sewer scene at the end, which is a shame. Dead Talk back and Phantom Planet are just OK so 3rd and 4th are a toss-up.

907 Hobgoblins (51st) 902 Phantom Planet (88th) 603 The Dead Talk Back (120th) 421 Monster A-Go-Go (148th)
Ive never seen what others do in Monster A-Go-Go. I've tortured myself to watch it several times to try and get it but that never happens. The movie itself is one of the most boring of the entire series, including from what Ive watched of the reboot, and despite others praising the riffing, it's never struck for me. Not even a little bit. I can at least see on some level what fans like about other often highly praised episodes Pod People, Mitchell, Jack Frost, I Accuse My Parents, etc. But this one I tie together with Final Sacrifice and kick 'em over the bridge. It is among my lowest ranked.
Hobgoblins works for me as an especially cornball 80s movie made among the backdrop of others more successful like Gremlins, Critters, and Ghoulies, etc. It is treated accordingly and makes for a solid if not great episode. I also enjoyed The Phantom Planet even if it loses its steam. It at least had some to lose.
The Dead Talk Back is another tedious B&W chore. On the list of one-and-done eps that Ive no intention of watching again.

The Shout copy of Dead Talk Back gets rid of the incessant tape hits present in the Rhino copy. Hobgoblins, never understood why they showed that one. It's more of a USA Up All Nite kinda flick.

Honestly, all the tape hits don't bother me. Most of the time when I'm watching an episode I'm also doing something else, knitting, crocheting, reading, or messing around with my laptop. I'm mostly listening and looking up occasionally.
I like all of these, including Dead, mainly because of the extreme goofiness. First for me is Hobgoblins, Dead, Monster, and Phantom. I would happily watch any of them.

Monster a Go-Go may be one of the worst movies they've ever done. Having said that, it's actually my favorite of this bunch for the sheer absurdity and idiocy of it all. I love all the "Frank's dead!" and "This coffee's warmer than Frank is" type jokes and the pear-shaped business and such. And of course the, "There was no monster" is just iconic and - WTAF??
The others all had their moments, I think The Dead Talk Back is my second fave on this set with all the making fun of that guy's voice and razor-blade-in-a-glass being the conduit to the other side shenanigans.
Don't remember much from the other two, even though I just watched some of Hobgoblins not too long ago. It's just a very boring ep and I don't like the overly campy movies that know they suck being riffed.
As for quality of all these sets, I'm not mentioning anything about that because it's stuff I don't really notice over all when I'm watching, nothing sticks out to me as having been very jarring when I first watched these sets.

I'm surprised that Shout! didn't interview Rick Sloane for the Volume 8 re-release, or that Ballyhoo didn't do anything on The Dead Talk Back. It would have been really interesting to know more about that film.

Rick Sloane is in the bonus feature "Hobgoblins Revisited," and "Myron Natwick Talks Back" is an interview with an actor from "The Dead Talk Back," both extras available on Shout's Vol. 8. There's also an interview with Bill Rebane, called "Bill Rebane Speaks."
