Not $0. ... Based on the costs breakdown, they are spending $60,000 to develop a browser-based Gizmoplex and fund the monthly events. An additional $6,000 brings Gizmoplex to smartphones and streaming devices. Yes, it's probably not actually 0, but compared to $5 million, it's a statistically insignificant difference to 0. And on a related note. I trust Joel's money breakdowns about as much as I trust, oh i dunno, those 2012 myan doomsday people? Joel has no idea how much his gigaplex is going to cost, joel probably has no firm details of his gigaplex idea, and I've been meaning to bring this up as it's own point -- I wouldn't be surprised if the gigaplex never actually gets finished and this is one of those total bust KS. I think assuming this gets funded, about 2 yrs from now, people will be happy just to get the downloads of the X episodes made. Keep in mind that last kickstarter was nothing but shows and the only reason they got finished was to bring in NetFlix. But that's just my Cynical BoB3K™ opinion for you all's enjoyment!
This however is not a cynical opinion -- $6,000 for the apps -- HA! No. way.

The Gizmoplex is created when they hit $2M, not $5M. And as mentioned, the $2M is not funding the Gizmoplex. 3% of it is. The Kickstarter has a pretty in depth breakdown of costs, as well as costs for season 11 episodes. If you don't trust any of those numbers, then it's not worth talking about further with you.

This However is not a cynical opinion -- $6,000 for the apps -- HA! No. way. So now that the Kickstarter hasn’t been roundly rejected by fans, the goal post has moved to it being one of those “total bust Kickstarters” a few years down the line. I’d like to hire you to write for my “Parody of a Fan Who Loathes His Fandom” Kickstarter project. I want to make sure I get someone who stays ahead of the curve. 2030: MST3K wins the Nobel Prize for Comedy. bob3k: “Here’s where it all falls apart.”

I'm not QUITE that cynical, myself.
I can take at face value that they're going to build a streaming subscription service of some type. Will it be more expensive to build than what they're budgeting for? Maybe. Will it have all the features they're promising at launch, probably not. But I'm fairly confident that they're going to be able to at least launch something capable of showing new episodes at the absolute bare minimum.
I mean. If it were 2015 and Joel said he was building a standalone subscription service on his own...I'd think he was nuts. But that kind of thing seems pretty simple nowadays.
I have no qualms with that aspect of the KS. Would I like it if they focused solely on making good episodes and left distribution to Shout? Yes, but it is what it is.

You do know we're in the reboot subforum right? I love almost all of the 198 original eps. I love the KTMA eps and Hamlet. We're discussing new, different, some successful some failed things here. This has been discuss to death in this forum before now-- Joel got us 14 new eps mostly from fan money, but then brought in evil corp which quickly drove the project into the ground, but also very likely made it possible to get the 14+6 eps. I'm not sure its a very big leap to think the interest would be gone now. And no, I don't really think it's that cynical to be doubtful, or to be surprised about the KS these first 2 days.

Sure, and there are plenty of people who love Episodes IV-VI who spend 90% of the online time discussing how terrible The Last Jedi is.

Oddly enough, it is possible to dislike something even if it has the Official On-Brand Product© seal of approval. Some people have different tastes. And disliking a new version of a product, even if it's "Officially The New Thing", doesn't make you less a fan. And it doesn't mean you don't like it because "Old Good, New Bad", it just means, comparatively speaking, New Thing does not hold the attraction Old Thing has for you, for whatever objective reason. Because you still like the Original Thing. Its just New Thing you're not too hot on. And you're allowed not to. Because you were already fan of Old Thing and fandom bylaws don't state you must be compelled to like New Thing no matter what. You're not harming The Brand just because you don't like the New Thing that The Brand is stapled onto. The Brand is fine without you. And other people that like New Thing shouldn't be offended just because not everyone likes New Thing. You're not protecting New Thing by going after naysayers, you're just closing off the walls to criticism and isolating yourself in New Thingdom.
Its ok for different people to like and dislike various bits of one fandom.
There was a lot of this after Rifftrax came out. Heck, Joel vs Mike. It'll all smooth itself out eventually.
Weird, I know.
For the record. I don't hate New Thing. I just can clearly see ways it could be better, and am open and hopeful those ways will eventually be implemented to allowing me to enjoy it as much as Old Thing, which I'm hopeful will happen eventually.

In other news. The first 3 episodes of Season 13 have been funded. The Kickstarter met its first goal.
Next goal at 3.3 million.

This is pretty much how I feel too. Although I will say I am pretty sour on this whole streaming service for one show thing. I will probably watch the new eps that come out (assuming they're better than Season 12 which I did NOT finish), but I won't be doing it through some subscription streaming service. People on here have pooh poohed bare bones open streaming services like Shout! TV and I don't know why. I use Shout! regularly. My kids and I watch stuff like Ultraman on it and it's great.

I still can't believe the first kickstarter was 6 years ago...

Odd that there haven't been any updates. They said they'd put up a FAQ, but so far nothing.
I don't think they expected to raise so much so quickly.

Well well, quite the banter here. Did I accidentally log into Reddit?
What I'm truly curious about is, what are the 3 projects Joel has backed? His profile is private so you can't see. Surely he backed both his projects, but what about that 3rd one? Theories please.

It was the Zappa documentary, I bet.

I’m going to think it’d be too gauche for Joel to back his own fundraisers, so he secretly backed the Manos and Atomic Brian restorations. It’d be fun if the third one was Manos Returns, but comedyc is probably right about it being the Zappa documentary.
I totally clicked and tried to see while I was refreshing waiting for the Kickstarter to launch, though :-P.
