Or Alex and his cousin just don't talk (about MST3K) a lot. So despite his cousin knowing K01 and K02 were released Alex didn't so Alex was still looking for them.

DK may have gotten more details but this is what the quote shared on page 6 says. Alex picked up the tape 5/6/19 and then held it for around 1½ years (late 2020/early 2021) before giving it to his cousin. It's not clear when it was digitized but his cousin finally told him what was on it last weekend (almost 3 years later). I'm not suggesting whether this timeline makes things more or less likely. But if Alex's cousin was holding the tape that long it is interesting we haven't heard a peep. The cousin does say that it was one of the last things he did with his father (the uncle who died), I inferred from that that the transfer was only done fairly recently, but I agree it's not explicit when that happened.

Which makes me honestly think that his cousin may be a relatively casual fan. Avid enough to know about K01-K03, and tell his cousin to be on lookout for them. But maybe not enough of a plugged-in fan to know that K01 and K02 were released by Joel several years PRIOR and were no longer lost by 2019. Like, he may be a fan hobbyist, that does this kind of stuff "in the real world" but doesn't interact too often with people like us online and it isn't as big a deal to him. Its strange, either way. That was exactly what I thought. I have extrapolated a whole character from these details... the guy was into the show when he was younger. Probably used to watch it with his father when it was originally broadcast. I assume at some point he found an on-line group -- possibly long enough ago that he was doing actual tape trading, but possibly just found DAPcentral and downloaded what was there. Put together a whole collection of what was available and then... once you're done collecting, it becomes less of an active hobby, you maybe move on to collecting other things, you start a family, you lose touch with the fan community. Maybe you buy the DVDs so you can throw out your old copies, or maybe you see them in a store and think "Oh yeah, I used to love that show". Then one day, your cousin sees a bunch of MST3k VHS tapes on their local Facebook marketplace, and they think of you right away because once upon a time you were really into it, and they text you and say "Hey, do you still collect these? Are there any you need?" You try to remember the name of that old website you used to go to, but most of them are closed down now anyway. And if you do find one, you no longer recognize the names, and they're mostly talking about the new hosts. We don't relate to that sort of person, but actually they're the fans who are closer to normal than, who can actually tell you from memory how available each episode is.
If the guy is a total fraud, he should write plays or novels, because he's got a keen eye for creating plausible details that suggest a whole lot of story and character.

Ok, I may as well post it here.... A guy on Twitter says he found K03I enquired on Twitter, he says his cousin has the tape, made a digital copy, and will upload it to "an archive" at some point. He's clearly not a huge MSTie, and has almost no concept of what he's sitting on. I've replied to him a few times about either paying for and getting the tape, or just borrowing it, or to pass my info onto his cousin, but nothing so far. I found the guy's discord and messaged his profile on there just now with a longer message since his DMs on Twitter are turned off. But I'm not holding out much hope. I was going to post this on the subreddit, but I don't want it to blow up and people start harassing the guy (besides me, lol). If this guy were really smart he'd get the tape back from his cousin and hold what would be an apocalyptically expensive eBay auction. But as it is, I'm just hoping to get the digital file, at a minimum. Though I'd REALLY like to get my hands on that tape and run it through my own rig. Just thought I'd post it here, because I've been obsessing over this for the past 24 hours and now I've run out of ideas, barring him randomly messaging me back. I guess I'll give it another day or so and if he doesn't respond I'll release it out into the wider fandom than the people that check this message board. Well, dang. I really hope this does turn out to be K03. That honestly would be quite the boon to MST3K, especially after the less-than-stellar fundraiser this past Thanksgiving.

If anything ends up coming of this, I'm happy to make the drive up to collect the tape. It's not too far of a drive for me.
I'm just catching up on this.

At this point the most likely scenarios that are going to happen are:
1. His cousin remembers the episode and uploads it himself somewhere and gives a copy to Alex, who gives me a copy. I pay Alex for the digital copy and request the cousins contact info to buy the tape outright. I end up uploading my digital copy to my channel also (while giving credit).
2. Alex reminds his cousin at some point towards the end of the month/early January. At that time, Alex will hopefully pass along my offer to buy a copy/the tape itself at the same time. Alex hopefully gets a copy and passes it to me. At that point I announce what I have and upload to Youtube/Archive (or hold off if the physical tape is in play). What happens then will depend on how much the cousin feels like getting paid and what his emotional attachment to the tape actually is (other than what Alex assumes).
2a. Either the cousin doesn't feel like selling the tape and it ends there, or 2b. He's persuaded by the idea of making a big pile of cash and agrees to sell the tape (plus give me exclusive rights to upload it).
At that point, I'd fly up to Milwaukee, rent a car, drive out there and pick it up in person myself. I don't want that tape traveling through the mail at the busiest time of the year for parcels. I have family in Milwaukee so it wouldn't be too prohibitively expensive to fly up on a Friday and fly back on a Saturday night.
However...if for some reason between now and the end of the month/early January Alex disappears or stops responding on Discord, I'll just try to reach out to the cousin directly, either thru Facebook or an e-mail address I've found.
And if that falls through, I'll take it all public and the internet at-large can take over. I'm sure Garrett Gilchrist would go knock on doors for it, and he lives up there. And I wouldn't put it past him.

Since it was brought up actually....
Alex disappearing or not responding back is...... Honestly what concerns me with this near potential acquisition the most..... I'm understanding we have lives outside of social media and no one owes you an explanation, but being ghosted/left on read, especially if it's something important I need to reach out to you on, is one of my biggest internet pet peeves.... I'm not someone who takes kindly to my time being wasted if I'm otherwise giving it to you for something important.
But..... Again, I already have a bit of a chronic grumpiness in real life that I would rather not overthink this and let it sour my mood even further. In the end there's bigger things to worry about like the fact that next year is going to be another elections year..... Guh.

Alright, I've given it 3 weeks, past the holidays. I've messaged him back on Discord to see if there's any updates from his cousin.

Just don't push too hard and scare him off.

I’m sure Kolos won’t be too much of a hard-ass with him. It sounds like he knows to remain as calm and respectful as possible.

Yeah, I couldn't be using a lighter touch here if I tried.
I'll quote you what I wrote:
"Hey man, hope the holidays treated you well. Happy new year. Have you heard from your cousin about getting the digitized copy of K03?"
For the first message in nearly 3 weeks, I think I'm being pretty gentle.

Over 24 hours and he still hasn't responded. And he's been on and offline several times. And posted on Twitter a few times since. Not sure how long to give him before following-up again.
