No! He died today at 78. He and Mickey are my favorite Monkees. I saw him in an interview with Mickey he did just two years ago (I put it on here - under Random YouTube video of the Day, I believe) and then I saw a video of him and Mickey doing their last Monkees tour just about a month ago and Mike looked so much frailer and thinner and I was wondering if he was sick. Now I hear this news. We'll miss you, Papa Nez.

So now Micky Dolenz is the only Monkee left. Sad.

^^^ I loved Nesmith's Monkees songs. He was very innovative. People say he was pretty much the first person to really do southern rock. I remember his special, "Elephant Parts" back in the early '80's, then the TV show based on that, "Television Parts". I don't remember most of the sketches, but I remember some of the music videos - Like "Ride the El Dorado to the Moon", and I remember the comedy bit "I Ate a One Ton Tomato". (A parody of the song "Guantanamera.") He pretty much ushered in the whole MTV generation. And, I put up a video in Gypsy's Games, in the Alphabet Game thread. He was involved in The Commander Cody Project which - get this - took old footage of film and added new dialogue. It's not talking over movies with quirky riffs, but it's a similar idea, and he beat MST3K by eight years thinking of this. Though, I think there was a movie that did that first, wasn't there? And of course people have been doing that forever on their own, but, still - he came up with some innovative ideas. I wonder if he watched MST3K? He probably would've liked it. He was someone who went to the beat of his own drum. (Different Drum, heh).

That's funny - Woody Allen did that with "What's Up Tiger Lilly", later you had "J-Men Forever" and of course, "Mad Movies" - but that kind of thing always cracks me up. Elephant Parts was another goodie. Crusin' was a favorite... This article goes through his music career, via video... Variety - Nesmith's best songs
