Before you say Disney or WB, we just saw a bunch of DC shows move from their own exclusive "DC Universe" streaming platform to HBO Max. I'm fairly certain DC is wholly owned by WB which is what HBO Max is. DC Universe was a thing WB was trying to do before they had HBO Max and everyone was pulling all their things into their own huge umbrella streams like HBO Max and Disney+. The point is still valid though. A better example is probably the recently announced move of HBO's westworld from HBO Max to Hulu for 'reasons', with the publicly stated one being to get more interest for some of their shows on free-with-ad services. (even though westworld is already canceled and done, so ?)

still upset that they left westworld with that dismal ending.
Tonight's special was essentially a clip show with no announcement or post-game.

before the "Return" was cemented into what it became I was hoping that we'd be getting or at least I thought it would be neat to get a female host to just change it up. I like Emily quite a bit but how they crammed her into this season always felt odd to me, then the crow voice change debacle.
And don't get me wrong I love Jonah, but I think there could have been a passing of the torch some how (as per Joel to Mike) I am re-watching some of these movies now that they are on Pluto and it makes me wonder what the process was for choosing some of these. I will admit I am a season 1-10 purist thinking that the work done there was probably the pinnacle of the formula (even more so when Mike took the reigns) and I'm just not seeing the magic like I did from the originals, I think what killed season 11 for me was the fact that there were millions of writers in the room (exaggeration of course) and that not all of the movies were great riff wise, as an example Avalanche, I know people swear by that episode but disaster movies to me feel like it would be a hard thing to riff.
So I've been watching the new season and the Santo movie they picked was kind of boring to me, in his long history of being around there's actually quite a few good ones out there I could list a few but I digress. Robot Wars was fun but I am not looking forward to Munchie again.
I think it was smart of them to put season 13 on Pluto but I agree they could probably get a deal with Amazon and Prime and maybe reach a wider audience.
And in all honesty I feel like if they just went back to the homemade sets like with the thrift store finds on the wall and have a central studio somewhere, it would give it the homey feel most of the older fans would know and love. The green screen backgrounds just look bad imo and yet I understand that because of restrictions and what not they didn't have much of a choice but now that things have calmed down, they could easily do a studio and a set on the cheap and it would be great.
All in all season 14 could be awesome if they just took some of the practices that made the original great, and I really really wish that the hachet was buried better between Mike and Joel, I would have loved to see Mike come back to the new show but I get why it hasn't happened.
I'll get off my soap box now thank you for coming to my SOL talk.

Looks like all of the other MST3K channels (like on Twitch, Tubi, Stirr, Roku, Sling, etc) will be getting season 13 entering rotation once a week starting Sunday April 2nd (then all the shorts on July 2nd). So it looks like Pluto's "exclusivity" was just for March.

Well once again there was no exclusivity advertised. Its just another place people can watch the last season episodes of MST3K.

Hokie cgi sets are just the modern version of hokie “stuff nailed to a wall” sets.
When I’m watching a movie “seriously”, bad cgi bothers me. When I’m watching a comedy show with a low-budget vibe, cheap cgi is appropriate.

Hokie cgi sets are just the modern version of hokie “stuff nailed to a wall” sets. I totally disagree with this. It might be the modern version of cheap, but it will never be as cool and fun as kit bashing and hot glue and real tangible stuff. Now granted, a set could literally be just a few things nailed to a wall, but that was not what old SOL was, it was an actual attempt to make a cheap but fun shabby-chic space station set.

If you don’t like it, that’s perfectly okay.
But I wouldn’t go so far as to ascribe motivation to the creation of one and not the other.
If you looked past your preference, you may find that the same love went into the digital creation of the new sets. They aren’t for you? Okay. But you want to diminish the work that went into them because you don’t like them? That’s assuming a lot and attempting to devalue something you don’t like for everyone.

Let's be honest, the bridge sets have not been a real artistic high point for the development of the show in the past three seasons, digital or not.
They looked flat and weren't utilized at all in Season 11/12. They looked flat and weren't utilized at all in Season 13. It just happens that they were physical for the Netflix seasons.
There wasn't anything TO enjoy about them.
But I seem to recall that the cgi sets were sold in the last KS as a necessity for covid restrictions. So let's not also ascribe some kind of real artistic purpose to them in Season 13. They were quickly thrown together green-screen inserts. They look like it. Let's not put lipstick on a pig.
But the physical sets in Season 11/12 looked like quickly thrown together cgi, too. It may just be the generic "generic 3D-printed shapes glued to a flat wall" aesthetic they chose for this go-round.
And no, you can't convince me that look is better or even in the same league as thousands of little toys and such glued to a standing, physical geodesic set that's wrapping around the host and bots.

Also I didn't see any kind of "ascribing motivation" or diminishing in the prior post pointing out that the digital sets aren't as fun as the actually built ones. All I see is a preference stated. Jumping on an innocuous comments like that as being diminishing and ascribing motivations comes off as unduly defensive.
Now, I'LL ascribe motivation and diminish. I don't have a problem with that. The motivation was to be cheap, quick and easy. Looking at that cgi bridge set and thinking that any high amount of love and affection and hard work went into it is reading too much into what clearly isn't there.
Here's to hoping they spend a little time to bring physical sets back in whatever form season 14 takes.

Claiming that the physical sets were an actual attempt to create something fun, is ascribing motivation and implies that the alternative is not.
Considering that the entire motif of the Gizmoplex is cgi, the virtual sets provide consistent visuals. Gizmonic Institute was toy buildings. Gizmoplex is all cgi.
I imagine the complaints about inconsistency if they did a mix of physical sets and then the cgi.
But some people are going to complain no matter what.

"Those darn MST producers! They spent good time and money to build a physical set for their TV show when the website its being hosted on is all digital! They should have gone out of their way to build a physical movie theater to host their website on! I can't stand these inconsistencies!"
Bro. What?!?
