Per the new backer email, season 13 is going to start being streamed for free on Pluto tv.
Which... kind of totally undercuts the entire point of Gizmoplex I thought...

Well, when you need money, you need money.
The Gizmoplex was for 1 yr early access and for watch parties.

And those exclusive shorts. Who could forget those memorable shorts. Like...the one about tennis balls? And something about...water?
Yes, hopefully they get a decent amount of $ from licensing to Pluto. That's 99% the reason for this. I still think they're going to do another big fundraiser for Season 14, but we'll see.

I'm curious how much money Pluto generates for shows. I can't imagine it's much, but I could be wrong.

More than 0, which is what I assume new sign ups to the Gizmoplex had dwindled down to once the season finished. But no, it probably isn't a huge windfall.

Watch parties...with Scener...how's that working out for them?

I think they are severely overestimating the amount of paid subscriptions or purchases this will bring into the Gizmoplex, once people see the new episodes and the way they were made, on Pluto.
The first few paragraphs of the update indicate they are expecting numbers of new fans coming from Pluto to support the Gizmoplex/the next fundraiser the same way the new fans from Netflix supported them in 2021, and it's not going to happen. They still seem to believe that the big draw to the Gizmoplex is not the actual new episodes and shorts, but rather the live events/tributes and extra content, which correct me if I'm wrong but has mostly been new segments added to the Synthia's Selects each month, right? They haven't experimented much with the live events beyond a few outliers like Jackbox game nights and the costume contest, and the chat function is so bad people resort to using the Discourse forum to live chat during events, so the promise of being able to use the Gizmoplex as a gathering place where everyone can enjoy new content together, while technically fulfilled, is nothing like it was envisioned and sold to KS backers.

See, I enjoyed the Jackbox events but the watchalongs felt a bit flat. YMMV, of course Well, when you need money, you need money. The Gizmoplex was for 1 yr early access and for watch parties. It would be kinda silly not to license the new episodes to someone (I bet the Netflix shows end up getting cycled into the Pluto mix as soon as legally possible) and try to generate interest and revenue that way... just as long as they set reasonable aims instead of pie-in-the-sky goals. I still wouldn't put it past them to eventually license a block of the new episodes to IFC and get them on regular cable.

I agree, although I thought no one would come back for KS 2, and they did. I'm not sure there are any more MST3K fans out there, at least willing to pay Joel directly for more MST3K. I'm sure Pluto can create some new casual fans, but new hard-cores willing to pay 200$ for a stream for one show?...

EDIT: Oops! I missed that someone had already posted re: Pluto TV. Boy, do I feel like a dolt. (Which is nothing new to me, actually...)
In any case, Pluto TV will have the basic episodes. The Gizmoplex will have the episodes, plus the Q&As with the cast, the special events, the new shorts, and access to older shows. And, I would assume, a first crack at Season 14 when it comes along.

Didn't I say awhile ago that eventually they'd go to another platform once successful if its more beneficial than staying on the Gizmoplex? Like how i wouldnt be surprised if they got picked up by Amazon in future. Hell, granted things were successful i wouldnt be surprised if things went full circle and they wound up on Netflix again with the big difference being they would retain full ownership of the show. But i never recall anywhere where it was promised that the Gizmoplex would forever be the only place where you'd ever be able to get MST3K going forward.

Let's just go straight to the source. From KS 2: Yeah, nothing about exclusivity. I will say though that Joel loves to hype things. So I'm sure anyone that has that impression probably got it straight from Joel's KS posts and promotions.

Joel gets excited. Which doesn't really excuse anything one way or another but does sort of explain why the vibe might be one thing.
Also, we live in a time when media corporations are trying like hell to gain exclusivity over content, so I can see why people might have had the impression that there was going to be some sort of "media exclusivity in perpetuity" promise when there wasn't. Honestly, I'm glad that folks who can't get Gizmoplex will have the chance to see it. with a method that lies outside of piracy. It'll just take a while.

Ironic because the reason why the Netflix run went south was because of their desire for exclusivity over content. But really there is no such thing when you have companies merging, licensing, or selling content constantly. Contracts run out, streaming platforms fold or get bought up. Its impossible to promise such a thing. What streaming business is "media exclusivity in perpetuity" a thing? Before you say Disney or WB, we just saw a bunch of DC shows move from their own exclusive "DC Universe" streaming platform to HBO Max.
Per today's update, there's a year-end special this Friday since this is the last week of the year-pass subscription. Maybe there will be some kind of announcement. They did confirm in the email there will be no more livestream events. And nothing except for a few outstanding things that were promised in the KS. Email also stated people needing "a new pass for our next season" but things are still in the very early planning stages. I'd like to think they are working on getting their own offices and studios and improving the production process before moving ahead with working on a new season.
