I thought of an esoteric reference the other day, but I can't think of it at all now. Dang it.

I just remembered another running gag reference that always flies over my head: In "Teenage Caveman", everytime we see the tribe (and the pack of dogs) chasing after Robert Vaughn, Joel & the bots sing something to the effect of "Doo dah doo dah doo doo! Dah doo doo!". My brother insists its a Scooby Doo reference, but I have my doubts. HELP!

I've never really seen Teenage Caveman. But I HAVE seen a lot of Scooby-Doo.
Now, I'm not sure exactly what the inflections on your "doos" are there, but it's possible that what you're writing is a kind of "swing chant" from a little Scooby-Doo spin off series called "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" where you take these kids from the seventies from the Scooby-Doo show, and make them all about ten years old (which logically lands them in the late eighties and early ninties). Sometimes whenever they were looking for clues what sounds like a jazz-choir just starts singing a quiet doo-wop jingle to act as back-ground music.

I beleive It's the bunny hop. You know, people back in the 50's got into a single file line and danced the bunny hop. If I'm mistaken someone let me know because that's what I put into my review. And that scene kills me, I'd hate to think I was laughing at the wrong thing all this time.

Yes, it is the bunny hop song. I know it well because I have a 3 year old. "Put your right foot forward Put your right foot out Do the bunny hop- Hop hop hop."
Please, God, make it stop.

No one answered me Is "I'm an icky elf" from Girl in Gold boots a recycled joke? It always seemed like an out of place riff to me. John

I have no idea if there's another side to that joke. I felt it was a case of noticing the obvious. With that silly rubbery face, he did look like an "Icky Elf".
But you never know. It could have a deeper meaning.

In several Season 3 episodes, Crow saids "And 3 hardboil eggs....make that 2 hardboil eggs." Does anyone know what that is from?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think its a reference to the game show "Let's Make A Deal" (yet another classic that Game Show Network is now no longer airing ) At the end of the show, even during and after the credits rolled, the host Monty Hall would always offer a bunch of random audience members a chunk of change if they had such odd items in their purses, pockets, or wallets.

Maybe it's a reference to a Marx Brothers movie "A Night at The Opera"?

You know, it might just be "A Night At The Opera." I can't recall that exact line, but it might fit in their somewhere.

Hi fellow MSTies. I am new here! My first post.
One of the funniest lines (not sure if it fits under esoteric per say) is when Joel, in The Beatniks, says
"Dish of ice cream. Don't tempt me!" in response to the sign on the wall in the diner.
Not sure why I found that so hilarious...but I did...
Think about it. Won't you? Thank you.

Welcome aboard Poe33, we love new members and look forward to your contributions.
That's a GREAT line - one of my favorites from the Beatniks. But it actually would fit better in one of the "best riff" threads we have posted on ths part of the MB .
This thread concerns those riffs that we can't figure out. What they mean or what they are in reference to. For example...
Josh used to always say... "Oh I hate to shoot a butt like that!"
Does anyone know where that comes from (google searches have proven fruitless)

I wouldn't be surprised. There are a LOT of Marx brothers references in mst3k.
Some that I've heard on mst3k:
(to someone singing or playing piano)- "If you get near a song, play it."
(spoken in a woman's shocked voice)- "Captain Spaulding!!"
"Either he's dead or my watch has stopped."
