I just got done reading the new Interview with Mike (good job Forrest, Don, Shawn, et al).
Mike was asked about the possibility of making some straight to video MST3K episodes. He said it has been talked about but not much more.
I, as I'm sure many of you, have pondered this before. It sounds feasible to me. And from inteviews I've read, it sounds like more than a few of the MST3K gang are willing to make more eps if they chance ever arose.
Does anyone know how many copies of a Rhino released MST3K DVD are sold when it comes out? Do they (AND BB) make any money off of them?
Also, what do you think the "difficulties" are in making the direct to video episodes that Mike mentioned?

I have read those FAQs before and I think that the Satellite News is a great site--I go there frequently. I don't think the answers to my questions were on there, though.

Sorry wrong link, it's here and hell here it is: Q: Did they consider making direct-to-video episodes? A: Yes, BBI and Rhino considered that. But when they crunched the numbers, it was clear that it wouldn't work. BBI needed a certain amount of funding to stay in business--that is, meet the payroll, provide benefits for its employees, maintain its office and studio, and all the things a business has to pay for. And Rhino needs to be able to make enough from the sale of the videos to pay for the rights to the movie being riffed and for duplication and distribution costs, and all the other expenses that go into putting the videos on the market--and make a reasonable profit. And the plain fact is that the video marketplace simply won't provide that level of revenue. The numbers just don't add up.

I don't think they should ever make more shows. It had a good run. Leave the past alone.
I'd especially hate to see the cast down the road in their 50s or 60s doing a reunion special, desperately trying to recapture the old magic. Those things are never good.
Would like to see more old eps released on DVD though.

Would it really be that expensive to give the MST3K treatment to a bunch of public domain movies?

Would it really be that expensive to give the MST3K treatment to a bunch of public domain movies? Honestly, no. The thing is, Mike, Kevin, Trace/Bill, et al. would expect a decent paycheck (at least that's what I would guess), and that means that the eps would really need to sell to pay them, as well as pay Rhino, and pay the studio, and pay the producers, and pay the......... As much as i'd like to see new eps, I just don't think it would work in video-only form. Especially since Rhino has been bought out by a huge corporation.

I honestly don't care as much about new episodes as I do seeing the old episodes on tv. I'm hoping someone finally figures out they could probably get a good chunk of episodes that have gone to public domain. I know there was a set of horror movies released recently that were all public domain and at least 6 had appeared on MST3K over the years.

I don't think they'd do that. Actually if they did do one, say, next year, they might actually parody a reunion special, and it might be very, very funny...kinda like when they parodied the infomercial in poopie parade of values. I think it would be alot like MST3K: TM-- different, unique, but still the same MST3K at heart.
That's my guess, too. That's why I was asking if anyone knew how many copys of an MST3K DVD Rhino usually sells. I would think they would have to sell something like 50K to 100K of them to pay everybody involved and still make a profit. And I would think even the MST3K movie itself didn't break much more than 100K copies sold. I dunno, really. I'm just making this up.

Why not do an independent movie? Make a sequal. Remember back in the KTMA days things only cost about $250 a show.
