I'd love to see Ballyhoo do a documentary on the KTMA era.

I feel like the KTMAs will have to eventually come out at some point. Some point before the copyright on the underlying movies expire though? Whatever their cultural significance, from a business standpoint, I don't think they'd sell well, and may damage the brand if a release containing them isn't clearly explained. I remember a lot of complaints whenever a CC season 1 disc would show up in a set, as they didn't want to pay for those episodes. KTMA would be even worse. It likely doesn't make economic sense to license a movie just for KTMA. If it was a movie they later redid, Shout would have the license anyway, so then it's a question of in what way to present it. As a bonus feature on the DVD with the redone episode makes the most sense, but that ship has sailed. Likewise, maybe including it on a pre-order exclusive bonus disc for the box set the redone episode would've worked, but there's only one set left. They could potentially be digital only releases though. But, with some of the episodes, they maybe couldn't license the films even if they wanted to. The Gamera movies are one example, since the DVD set is out of print, and it's extremely unlikely Shout will ever get a license for them again. It's a shame that legal and economic realities will likely keep at least most of the KTMA episodes from being officially released, but as with the unreleased cable episodes, just because we want something to happen doesn't mean it will.

I've always imagined that if they were to release the KTMA episodes, it would most likely be via streaming service. That would be of lowest possible cost to Shout while the audience would get to pick and choose whether they want the episodes in their collection.
Should they ever hit disc, they would probably do a limited online exclusive run and let the collectors run it down then wash their hands of it. But that might not be feasible with film licensing issues.
It's probably not going to happen, but those would be the avenues that I would explore, at any rate.

Well, there goes that idea.

Complaints from who, and where? I doubt those sets sold any less than those without a season 1 episode in it. Putting one KTMA in a future set isn't going to hurt Shout's bottom line either.
Shout has the rights to the Gerry Anderson shows, which is why the two compilation films done in Season 0 made it out as Kickstarter rewards. Cosmic Princess (Space: 1999) ought to be a cinch. Unless rights have lapsed in recent years, the non-Gamera Sandy Franks ought to be in the clear?
Other films like Hangar 18 and City On Fire have had Blu-Ray releases in the past few years, so the rights holders should be easy to sort out. Superdome was a tv movie and only seems to have turned up in those bargain basement DVD compilations. Ditto for Death Flight.
The Last Chase appeared on DVD in 2011, and went out of print pretty quickly, which may mean rights issues.

I think you may have quoted the wrong person. I don't recall stating anything about fan complaints. Though I have seen season one hate over the years, aggressive hate too. So I have little doubt that complaints did exist. But I'm pretty sure a lot of them bought the sets regardless, because there were three non-season-one episodes on each.

If this is going to be the last classic DVD release, someone needs to get on the horn with Shout and ask if they could PLEASE include the remaining MST Hour Wraps.

Is there any specific reason that the Comedy Central era special "This is MST3k" has never been released as a bonus feature?

EXCITING NEWS! There may be one more DVD set of unreleased MST3k classics episodes coming later this year! I was listening to the latest episode of the MST3k Revival League podcast, in which horror movie host and long-time MST3k DVD bonus feature contributor Mr Lobo was interviewed. soundcloud.com/mst3krevivalleaguepodcast/episode-159-mr-loboHe said that while he was being interviewed for The Sinister Urge bonus feature for the Volume 9 DVD release, he was also interviewed for a new 30th Anniversary DVD set, that will feature more unreleased episodes. He stated that this will most likely definitively be the last DVD release of episodes not yet commercially available of the classic run of the show. If true, I would wager on Quest of the Delta Knights, as well as the Paramount-Olive Films episodes of Fire Maidens, Deadly Bees, and Space Children. We're well past the five year mark of Olive Films' DVD releases of Space Children and Fire Maidens, in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Maybe Shout has worked out a deal with Paramount/Olive for Deadly Bees before the possible 5 year expiration mark of Deadly Bees' 2015 release before 2020. AWESOME news!!! I too would definitely wager on DELTA KNIGHTS and the Olive/Paramount titles being in the set. Hopefully we hear some official word soon!

I'd guess it was Comedy Central, because it's narrated by Penn Jillette. Is there a reason Shout can't license things produced by Comedy Central? (I notice that they left off the brief behind-the-scenes segments that aired during the Turkey Day "Night of the Blood Beast", which I had thought was just an oversight but I guess could have been because they were owned by Comedy Central.) Just curious because, if they're doing one more release, it seems like it would be a good extra (it actually aired around "Fire Maidens" and "Eye Creatures", so that it would be chronologically appropriate if the set includes one or both of those).
Another idea, Shout does have a licensing agreement of some kind with Sony, so there's a relationship there, perhaps they could get the footage from the "Playstation Underground" disc, which was released just prior to season 9 and thus would fit well on any of the unreleased season 9 episodes.

If it's the later, then Shout probably doesn't have access to it. I'm 99% sure that "The Making of MST3K" (the Sci-Fi era doc) wasn't made by BBI either, and it appears as a bonus feature on one of the DVD volumes. It's clear that they didn't have the master, though, as the quality of the video is borderline Youtube-level. Kind of makes you wonder who does have the master of that special. I assume either The Sci-Fi Channel itself or Gold Coast Television Entertainment, which is the company that was commissioned to make it. I guess it just goes to show that just because Shout! has the rights to something doesn't mean anyone can provide them the original media. If a third party made something, it would have been on them to have archived the tapes, and if they didn't Shout! has to resort to nth generation sources. Similary, I'm curious as to whether BBI held the master tape for that Playstation Underground sketch - another thing that never turned up as a bonus feature - or if that too belongs to whatever defunct company actually produced it. Anyway, I suspect in the case of "This is MST3K", the problem is the presence of a bunch of outside clips that would have to be cleared, and not the rights to the special itself.

At least with the Playstation one, there are good circulating copies, but the only copies of "This is MST3k" I've ever seen are pretty low-res.
As to your other good point, I think they'd be more likely to have the master for the Playstation one, or at least a first generation copy of it, because that actually involved shooting stuff on the silhouette rig. The most I could imagine for "This is MST3k" is that they'd have raw footage that they sent to whoever edited it.

Haha, I started watching it on Youtube and in order to explain the premise of the show, Penn shows a clip from "Amazing Colossal Man" and then an extended clip from the episode. So I guess it would require some clip swapping...
(It is Produced by Comedy Central, yes.)
