This has probably been brought up before, but I still wonder what could have happened to episodes K00, K01, K02, and K03. I know that there are no known fan copies of K01-K03, unlike fan copies of K04-K21. From some stuff I've read around the internet, it seems that Jim Mallon is most likely person to have copies of K00-K03. It baffles me as to why he is not releasing them to the public. Does anyone know why?

Barb Tebben (I think), mentioned that in order to release ANY of the KTMAs, commercially, they have to get the rights to the films shown for those episodes (whoever owns the Thunderbirds movies), and also the people who own the KTMA episodes, as BBI does not own them.
Since KTMA, overtime became a WB station, and last year WB merged with UPN to become CW, I'm guessing the CW station for Minniapolis now owns the rights to the KTMA episodes.
It's a longshot. I don't know if this is the case.

I think it was made pretty clear in the Episode Guide book that Jim Mallon and most everybody involved including Joel really didn't much care for the KTMA episodes. They consider them "formative" as in "not very good" and don't want them seen anymore. They probably wish they would go away. You can only get bootleg copies of these episodes.
If anyone has 00-03 it's Jim Mallon and I seriously doubt he'd dub any copies for you. Too bad though. There are probably some MISTIES out there that would gladly pay $500 for each episode. I think some time ago a fan placed an ad in the Minneapolis paper offering a $700 reward for anyone who had tapes of these episodes. No one replied.

K00 never aired on KTMA - it was just shown to the network as a pilot. K01-K03 would be the only episodes that might exist through long-lost KTMA recordings.
I believe Jim Mallon has master copies of ALL the episodes, including all the KTMAs (how else would he have gotten those pristine KTMA clips for the Scrapbook tape?). But since BBI considers KTMA to be a training ground where they learned their craft, you're unlikely to ever see them released commercially on DVD.
The real snafu with the KTMAs is that, technically, nobody involved with the show ever owned the rights to them. BBI didn't secure them, and shortly after MST3K left its airwaves, KTMA was revealed to be broadcasting all its movies illegally without the proper express permission from any distribution companies, which is why they kicked the bucket in 1989.

I know that none of the KTMA episodes will be released commercially (which stinks). But K04-K21 are available for trading. I guess people didn't become interested enough in the show until K04. But since K01-K03 did air, why didn't anyone record those episodes? Did KTMA air them only once?

It would have taken a few weeks for the right people to discover the show. Not many people tape every show just in case. And not everyone in 1989 had VCRs. I think it's surprising that as many of them exist as there are. And it would seem that KTMA didn't re run them later in the season or some one would have taped them.

From the big book with all the air dates of the KTMAs, K02 and K03 were shown on the same night and K01 was only shown three days before them (I think, I've not got the book in front of me). So with the dates being so seemingly random, and KTMA not exactly having the biggest demographic, it's not surprising no-one recorded them.
I put an advert on some Minneapolis trading website, and sent emails to all the newspapers in the Minneapolis area, seeing if anyone would be interested in a little story about some British TV nut searching for these lost episodes. Unfortunately not, and I can't afford to put adverts in their classified sections. Unless they made copies for friends and family at the time, it genuinely looks like they're gone for good.

Sorry Mort. British nut stories are a dime a dozen.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:
The episodes, if attainable, will require the skills of a few ninja to claim them.

I doubt any of us here will ever see copies of those episodes. Jim Mallon probably taped over them anyway with episodes of Friends and Frasier.

Actually, I think it would be far more efficient to send TimeCop Abe back to 1988 and have him record the episodes, then bring them back to the present.

They consider them "formative" as in "not very good" and don't want them seen anymore. They probably wish they would go away. I can understand why they would think that. To date I have seen two KTMA episodes. Sure, the riffing may not be on par with later seasons, but when I watched them, they had a certain feeling to them not available in later shows. I think that the old sets and ad-libing were cool. I wish that Mallon, Hodgsen, and everybody else could understand what me and all the other MSTies nationwide are talking about.
