MST3K often featured comically bad special effects that were (in some cases) worse than the movie's. But occasionally they did a few good special effects on the show.
I'm typing this after having first seen The Sidehackers this morning. Joel's pet slinkey is quite an effect. I'm still trying to figure out how they did that. It's obvious that the top part of the slinky is being tugged on a string.... but... how is the rest of the slinky moving around like that?
I find it suspicious that although the Rhino DVD contains outtakes of the other host gegment bits, no outtake of Joel and the slinky was included. It was either all done in one take, or the Brains didn't want anyone to see how the illusion was made.
So what would you guys think the most elaborate effect the brains did was?

Uh, Joel stuck his hand through the back of the box, held the slinky and moved it back-and-forth. No magic. No CGI. No Rotoscope. No pneumatic armatures. Just blackout material and lighting...oh and a fluorescent slinky.

The whole final segment of "Laserblast" was pretty elaborate. Not the most, perhaps, but it's probably my favorite.

I loved the LIFE SIZED Operation Game. Not so much an effect as a prop but very well done.

Did the same thing with the "Pin-bolus" prop at the beginning of "RIng Of Terror"

And the Sign Language Translator. And extend-o-arms. And the mind-controlled guitar. Boy, they sure liked that, didn't they...

Uh, Joel stuck his hand through the back of the box, held the slinky and moved it back-and-forth. Well, even with that, it's still very difficult to tell that it's Joel doing the moving. He probably had black gloves on to hide in the black box, but I still can't see how he could get a slinky to move around like that, with just one arm. I also, just now noticed that Joel's looking off-camera at a monitor or something.

My fav special effects are the simple ones and they all involved messing with Tom's head. Whether it was turned into a snow globe, aromatherapy bowl or tasty snack, they made good use of that crazy plastic dome!

POP HIM POP HIM POP POP POP!My personal fave, however, is when they put the vent head on Tom. Disturbing, and one of the most touching memory on the Scrapebook Tape.

This might not count, but in the Sci Fi specials I loved how you actually got to see inside the Mystery Science Theater.

I like the effect they made with the cheese tub thing. All the stuff floating in there. Looks cool.
