Hey, everybody. I'm brand new here and I don't know how frequently this board is trafficked anymore, but I hope I can get some help. I've got a group of friends coming over tonight to start a "MST3K Night" and a few of the guys have never seen MST3K before. I have the entire series on video and we plan on going through the episodes in order to avoid endless arguing every night, but we're all unsure as to what episode to kick things off with. We want a great show for the new guys to get an idea of how funny MST3K is (since the first season was admittedly a bit dull, but some hilarious running gags came from it), and hopefully an early episode so we don't have to try explaining all of the confusing elements in the later SciFi Channel episodes. Any suggestions?
So far, the episodes I'm considering are "Eegah!," "Pod People," "Time of the Apes," or "The Amazing Colossal Man."

There is no more trafficking on this board. After two or three members were busted, the rest of us quit. That is my story and I'm sticking to it. By entire series, do you mean commercially released episodes only or the entire series? If you have the entire series and plan to watch them in order, start with season three. The show really hits it's stride at that point. Go back and pick up the earlier seasons after you finish season 10.

Pod People is a personal favorite of mine and I believe that it's held in fairly high regard, with some dissenters, by more everyone on this board. It's one of the all-time classic episodes of the show and I can't see how you'd go wrong by starting off with this one. It's one that long time fans enjoy while being accesible to newcomers.

I would suggest Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie to those who have never seen the show before.

From personal experience, everyone I've shown "Werewolf" to has instantly fallen in love with the show.

In response to skyroniter, I mean the entire series (I've been doing a LOT of tape-circulating!) and I have to say that I personally find Seasons 1 and 2 hilarious. I know I'm one of the four people who has this opinion, but I stick by my guns.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestions, guys. I think I'm going to go with the movie to start with. It's short, simple, and Dr. F does a pretty good job of introducing newcomers to the concept of his "experiment" in it.

I would suggest Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie to those who have never seen the show before. I agree. This is the most accessible for anyone who has never seen the show. It has a broader appeal.

That's true.

Was that not one of the points of the movie? From what I have heard, the movie was made to not only attract people that were already fans of the show, but to also attract the average movie-goer unfamilar with the show.

I'd recommend Space Mutiny. That was one of the funniest ones.

i wouldn't suggest Space Mutiny or Soultaker since Space Mutiny is in the middle of the roman times subplot thingy and might throw people off, although the riffing in that episode is quite good...
i would suggest Soultaker after they have seen a lot of Joel episodes... then show them a bunch of Mike episodes and THEN go for Soultaker to make Joel's return seem, you know, special or whatever.

Hmm. I always seem to show the first Gamera movie..It's got everything, crappy dubbing, men in big rubber suits, giant fire breathing monsters and destruction..
