I'm sure Joel and company do have some sort of amazing plan. They've proven that they know how to put on a good fundraising show multiple times now. But I'm really interested in what sort of fantastical updates they can provide without involving actors at all. Using big name actors is a big draw for casual fans. Not knowing if your favorite cast members will return doesn't help anyone particularly with the multiple casts of last season. And even if the strike is resolved how many of the actors have confirmed their interest? Contracts are a thing that will likely still have to be worked out before any announcements.

the kickoff video screams 'Joel doesn't give a damn anymore.' Joel is hiding off camera, Cast(s) are nowhere and unconfirmed, bots are nowhere, Matt is hardly capable of 'hyping' the fanbase (no offense matt). Fact is the strike makes this a really bad time to go through with this. Plus the writer's strike just ended recently. I'm not sure how much affect that has on anything. I think Joel is on a tight rope between being an actor and being crew. But of course this has to be tied into Turkey Day so it's not like they can delay the start of the fundraiser. Unless they wanted to wait a whole year.

I'm really curious what this final pledge drive telethon would even look like if the actors strike is still going on. Would the bots at least be able to appear if they're voiceless?

If all you see is people telling you they can't wait to give you more money, what happens when you realize there's quite a few people who can wait? You'd think they'd have some idea based on Gizmoplex sales after the fundraiser. I feel like gaining a new audience is the biggest thing missing here. Having a closed ecosystem means nobody's wandering into the Gizmoplex by mistake and happening to get hooked on the show. You have to already know of it. Also this whole thing about was the Gizmoplex supposed to be self sustaining. It feels like they used sneaky words that people could understand either way based on what they want. Nobody lied but I wouldn't consider their posting entirley upfront.

Joel is a master salesman/showman. While I dislike these giant pledge drives and as problematic as these two have been with the rewards I wouldn't be shocked if he manages to pull off another record breaking event in a year or two.
Just hopefully we'll get some stability with cast and crew for any future seasons.

I say the first Kickstarter will be beaten at this point. The jumps that these silly little challenges and rewards brings is really shocking to me. So I think tonight's telethon will be able to easily encourage people to join the party - and there's probably people holding out to donate so they can feel more like they're a part of something. None of this stuff really works on me and I find all of this marketing quite tedious but I'm pretty much a marketer's worst nightmare and it's very difficult to get me to pay more.

Update finally dropped. the 5.8 challenge is a Halloween 3-D special and all backers get glasses final challenge is to beat the previous grand total of $6,364,230 to get a holiday special episode along with an extra month of Gizmoplex Oh. That's... Huh. Ok then. Not quite the super secret surprise I was expecting. So these new bonuses will just be adding episodes? Probably means for a bit of uneven spacing. Maybe instead of going with seasons they could go to a model where a new episode or short is released every two weeks that would allow for a longer time of guaranteed content. Never mind I hadn't actually seen the update yet. Looks like they will be spacing them out more and holding for future seasons. Good idea.

Wow it just hit $5 million! Watching this counter is probably going to turn into my entertainment for this evening.

I think a lot of this with the Gizmoplex update is people reading it as what it will very likely wind up being (just a website with customized graphics and little more) versus the grandiose plans that are being suggested.

Now that I think about it an interactive playthrough of one of those games would be a fun event.

Quickly skimming through the update, I can't help but get the feeling that the Gizmoplex is just another streaming service but with a really fancy menu. They're really hyping it up as a "virtual theatre", but I don't get what makes it that special. Maybe I just need to read it more closely, but I'm not seeing it. I also briefly saw that there are potential plans for MST3K themed games on the service. If that ever becomes a reality, maybe they could that fan made Manos game on there. He's envisioning some sort of total VR world. What he seems to be thinking of will not become reality. The general ideas seem good but the whole immersive VR aspect reminds me of old video game marketing of Full Motion Video where they promise an amazing immersive experience but the video size is tiny and quality is low.

Because if this thing exists next year/18 months from now and they ask for separate donations for Season 14? Oh boy. Let's be real. Some of us more negative people here may not like it (I don't like the yearly campaigning approach from anything. Not particular to this.) but based on this campaign I bet it'll get funded anyway. I wonder if they'll go with a different distribution plan.

I just find it a bit hard to believe that everything is somehow in such disarray despite everything that ever has been released being in pristine condition. I mean I don't think things were stored in great conditions but all this exploring to find anything over several years seems over the top.
I think they know what they have and just don't want to make it public for their reasons.

I don't think we should get caught up in that sidebar, because looking back at the Kickstarter when they were released, Joel explicitly talks about finding those two episodes in a box that just got sent over. This is pretty much how every released bit of KTMA has been described as being found at least after the 1994 scrapbook tape. Who knows how much truth there is to these mystery boxes that contain the KTMAs.

Wow! Yesterday's numbers are just amazing 207K! I'm not following the numbers close enough but I believe 4 25K spots were taken so just 4 individuals contributed nearly half of yesterday's earnings. Still that other 107K is impressive! Highest number of new backers in a single day in a while too. I wonder if an article was posted somewhere.
