I was just listening to the commentary track on the new Simpsons DVDs. We all know that in the "Who Shot Mr. Burns, part 1" episode, MST is showing on the TV in Moe's bar. It's part of the clue that Smithers watches Comedy Central at 3:00 PM.
Anyway, on the commentary track in that scene, show-runner David Mirkin points out MST and says that, "Back then, we could make fun of the fact that Comedy Central really had crappy shows."
Them's fightin' words!
Actually, he didn't specify that he thought MST was a crappy show, just that in 1995 Comedy Central had a lot of crappy shows. Which is true.

Yeah, I don't think he was referring to MST3K when he made the "crappy shows" comment; it was more of a general statement (which was true) about Comedy Central back then, in order to explain the later comment Smithers makes about watching Comedy Central.
There was also an MST3K homage in Futurama, which shared the creator and a few of the same writers/producers, so I think they are fans.

Someone on the commentary for 'Saturdays of Thunder' mentioned that the name 'Mendoza' was used in MST3K...I can't remember if they were happy about that, or if they were just mentioning it...

Perhaps he meant, "Back then Comedy Central had some really crappy shows... MST was the only one that wasn't."? Matt

It was more like, "It was funny to make fun of Comedy Central because back then they had a reputation for airing crappy shows. Whereas now, they air good shows like South Park."
He didn't actually say South Park, but I think that was the implication of his comments.

To be exact, I think Bill Oakley pointed out MST3K on the screen, at which point Mirkin pointed out how crappy CC was.
And there have been a few MST mentions on Simpsons commentaries, Mike Reiss has been the provider of most and seems to be/have been a fan.

It sounds like he wasn't insulting MST3K. And as Curly would say is a "victim of soicumstance." Probably said it at just the wrong time.

Well I think that both CC and Sci-Fi both only have stinkburger shows anymore. (well CC has the daily show to be fair) I mean really, I can't find any shows on TV that could ever be any better than MST3K. It was and is, the best.

I seem to recall them saying EVERYTHING on CC was crap in those days. And Josh was in the room but said nothing during that part of the commentary.

They also mention MST on the commentary on the season 4 (?) episode 'The Itchy & Scratchy Movie'. when Homer and Bart enter the theatre in the future, the walk in and sit down in Shadow-rama. One of the commentors says "That was our homage to Mystery Science Theater 3000." Someone's a fan.

I rechecked that Mendoza reference, and it was that they were pleased MST3K had used it.
What episode would that have been in, though?
