Whoo, good thing I bought this one the week it came out...I suspected that the Godzilla thing would come back to bite 'em in the butt eventually.
That seals it, though - I'm buyin' Volume 5 this week. I'm afraid to wait any longer.

To help you out with your smart shopping needs: www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=116691101/OverStock.com currently has the best online price for Vol. 10, $36.77 (plus about $1.40 shipping). If you're buying something else at the same time, you can use the 10% off coupon. ("This offer excludes orders comprised solely of products from the "Books, Music, Movies & Games", "Auctions", and "Travel" categories.") Not quite. DeepDiscount DVD has it for $35.88, no shipping necessary. (Unless you end up using the coupon, then Overstock will be cheaper. But then, you're still spending more, since you have to buy something else too.)

I'd have to add $2.60 in sales tax. The difference between Overstock and DDD ends up being $38.17 versus $38.48. A whopping 31¢! Heh. But if you don't live in Illinois, then DDD would be cheaper.

Wow, looks like I might have been right afterall. This sucks, but it's something that's happened the show's entire history. I'd recommend everyone buy a copy ASAP if they haven't already. Stores will most likely still sell the rest of the stock they have rather than send them back to Rhino (hopefully). On Volume Six they're pretty much all public domain titles that have been released by multiple companies, I'm assuming Rhino just released them without securing the rights from anyone. I don't think there will be a problem with that one, although The Beginning of the End was a surprise and had been assumed public domain for a long time by a lot of people. The ones that have problems come from when Rhino gets them from another distributer which is sometimes a problem because I think the distributers don't have the rights to let Rhino use the movie but do anyway. The main ones that I think may be affected later are probably Wild Rebels and Women of the Prehistoric Planet. Beginning of the End has never been PD, but if you look during the credits on the MST3k version the company's copyright is blanked out! Very interesting. Image has the DVD rights currently (I'm not sure if they had anything to do with it though). Wild Rebels is another Crown International movie, so the rights to that one will probably expire next year too. I was lead to believe Women of the Prehistoric Planet was owned by Wade Williams (Seeing as he has the copyright, and his company released it to VHS), so I'm not sure about Krypton Films in any case. I wonder what the history of Krypton International is, though, as they are the ones who licensed the movie to Rhino according to the box. Are they a reputable company, are they owned by a bigger corporation, are they the ones who used to be Goodtimes? I'd never heard of them. When I saw that Toho wasn't on the box I knew that wasn't a good sign. I could not find ANYTHING on Krypton International, not a registered copyright or website or anything. They have nothing to do with Goodtimes, or Gaiem (the company that bought Goodtimes). What they really ought to do, if they can't get the rights back to Godzilla, is just release an MST3K DVD super-pack with the available titles from Volume 3 and 10 together at a discounted price. Something along those lines would be good, since they'd have the discs already made.

Wow, looks like I might have been right afterall. And god knows you kept writing to Toho to give them info to use against Rhino until you were right, didn't you? Happy now?

Geez, this is getting old fast. I just shelled out some cash for Vols. 1 and 3. I didn't think I'd have to be chasing this many box sets down so quickly.
Still, I better do it. It's worth it to have them, but can't they spread this out a little? It would help me a lot. Heh.
EDIT: Ordered my copy from DVDPlayground on Sunday and still don't have a shipping confirmation. It's also not appearing on their website anymore, from what I can tell. C'mon confirmation...

Might just be as simple as changing the cover art. Maybe they had permission to use film but were prohibited from using Godzilla image for advertising. Hence the generic dinosaur and toho objected.

I was very very surprised to see G vs. Megalon on this boxed set. I heard that a few years ago that Toho had re-retained all the rights to all the Godzilla films ever made but that this one was in a gray area. Still, they own Godzilla, the name and the image and you can't even say Godzilla without getting sued by Toho. They must give permission. They're very protective of the guy. I'm sure this got pulled because of Toho.

Thanks for the alert, I had not gotten it yet but I just ordered it from an amazon.com seller for 37.72 plus shipping. I tried DeepDiscountDVD first but they are out of stock there.

Listen, I didn't give Toho any information they couldn't have easily found themselves. I'm not some coporate lawyer, just a fan who was interested in finding out some information. They didn't need me to let them know about this release. Look up "Godzilla" on any online site, and voila. If Vol. 10 does go out of print, and due to GvM, it's because Rhino didn't do their homework. As I've said numerous times by now, I love the episode and was glad the set came out. But it also pissed me off because I knew there was no way it would stay in print long, which sucks for everyone. You're pointing a finger in the wrong direction, so bite me.

I'm sure they didn't need you to point it out, but in the future why don't we just keep our mouths shut? I think that's a good general rule, for all MSTies. Just enjoy the releases and don't ask too many questions. Oi.
And be civil, travis. No need for serious "bite me"s.

Glad I got my copy. Damn copyright issues. I hope Rhino doesn't get sued. Maybe they could re release Volume 10 and substitute another title for the offending one. I really like this idea of re-releasing Volume 10 with a substitute for G Vs. M. My fan copy DVD of 212 looks good so I would love that idea. But what other Joel-era Ep would replace it?? 113-The Black Scorpion would be good for me (my VHS copy is really bad)

from now on MST releases should be treated as classes where you've been excused before the teacher gives the assignment.
next person who says: "what's the homework for tomorrow," is so grounded.
as for replacing the episode--that'll really upset me. See, I had just finally scrounged up money to place my first order to skyroniter since last spring (teaching as a new adjunct at a university doesn't pay so well), and I had to turn around and spend it on volume 10 so I could make sure I got a copy.
No way in hell I'm buying the same thing twice for one new episode.

I just think it's silly to worry about such things or tempt fate with them. We, as MSTies, all should know that most of the Rhino episodes are hanging by a thread, so to speak, and they could be gone anytime. Don't say a word to the filmmakers about it unless you know they're okay with it. Just keep quiet and don't bite the hand that feeds, albeit somewhat unintentionally and indirectly.
I'm not trying to pick on Travis, and I'm not saying this is all his fault, but I think we all might learn something from this. At least, I did.
