I loved Diner, Dr. Strangelove, Annie Hall and rather liked the other two. I guess that makes me a snob but I think it's more of being a very poor article.

I love the idea of going after sacred cows and movie snobs, but this article was kinda "meh" for me. It seemed to be too obvious and easy ("Rushmore is overrated because it's weird! Dr. Strangelove has the slow pace of older B&W movies! Annie Hall is bad because of <insert Soon Yi reference here> and people are wearing 70's fashion! Steve Guttenberg lol!"). I wasn't expecting some sort of in-depth take-down of these movies, but I still expected a little more from Mike.
Still looking forward to his other pieces, though.

I don't expect much of Mike as a writer of articles. His true genius lies in the mockery of film and that's it.

A lot of his articles (this one included) don't excite me much, but he's more than a one trick pony. His novel was actually pretty good - a little clunky in parts and the thinly disguised celebrities gimmick wore thin, but a good read and pretty funny overall.

Yeah, his Movie Megacheese book is a great read, and most of his other essays are pretty solid. I think he's just all-around talented. And even talented people crank out a few clunkers now and then.

Just to give Mike some props in this thread, I thought it was funny and agreed with what he had to say.

*thumbs up* I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way about Strangelove. Good call Mike!

Mike addresses the internet criticism of this article with some incredulity in a new (and horribly recorded) interview with Something Awful. He's says he's perplexed that people get so vicious about what boils down to personal preference.

He's says he's perplexed that people get so vicious about what boils down to personal preference. Isn't that a bit like the pot calling the kettle black? Isn't he vicious in a lot of his movie reviews, which are published for the public to read and be influenced by in some way? Not that he's trying to completely change people's opinions, but writers do want people to pay attention to what they write. Plus, he used the word "snob" to describe people who like those comedies. I wasn't personally offended, I'm just pointing out that his article had a harsh tone and it wasn't particularly funny (the latter is the worse flaw to me). It seemed designed to get under people's skins. He's made a career out of being vicious about what boils down to personal preference (movies), so I don't see his argument here. He can dish it out, but he can't take it?

Good point. But to play Mike's advocate, he may be vicious in his own commentary about film, but never personal. What I think he's saying is that people get personally offended when someone doesn't like what they like, and he finds that odd.
Then again, he did call them "snobs."

OK, after listening to the interview, a couple things strike me. Both the article idea of "Snob Comedies" and the movie choices were made by Cracked, not Mike. So it wasn't entirely his idea in the first place. Still, the use of the word "snob" in the criticism of the movies has naturally led to fans of those movies feeling personally offended. I get Mike's point, though. People are often touchy about the things they like. "I like Cap'n Crunch." "Oh, I don't like it." "What?! How could you not like Cap'n Crunch?! I'll kill your whole family!!!"

Cereal Killer.
Mike's a snob too about movies. Maybe the biggest snob of 'em all. I don't take what he says too seriously. You can make fun of anything 'cause nothing in art (a la movies) is objective. I love half the movies he ragged on but that doesn't mean they're not unraggable and they shouldn't be unraggable. I will say Strangelove never gets boring to me. The plane scenes aren't as fun as other parts maybe but I still love 'em. And I totally love Rushmore. Can watch that over and over and over and over and over and over and..ov...er...you get what I'm sayin'.

For me it's not about liking or disliking a flick. Everyone has a right to their opinion. I just don't like my opinion dismissed like that. "Oh the only reason you like this or that is too impress others". No I don't damn it! I hate it when Kevin does that as well.
So it's not the opinion I'm having a problem with, it's the labeling,

I know what you mean. I also hate it when I'm told I was too stupid to appreciate something. "Oh, you didn't get it?" Yes, I did. It sucked.
