Compare that to the mad scientist animation released a few weeks back, with Mike, Kevin, and Bill. Even after watching that several times, I still literally laugh out loud at it. Could you provide a link? It's the "Max the Hero" cartoon (I can never remember the name) which is linked in Sky's "Special Contest" over in General Chat. -- spriiings, I laughed more at that rant than I did at the new short. But not in the right ways. AZ, I appreciate a lot of the non-sequiterish writing, where one of the characters expounds at length on some random topic. I know they did that on the show a lot. However, I just didn't enjoy the kayak speech - I don't know if it was the delivery or the writing, but it just felt like an unfunny copy of that style to me.

I too must go into the camp of not liking this first short. It pains me to say this, but if the next ones are as devoid of laughs as this one, then Jim Mallon has himself a misfire on his hands.

I should probably just keep my mouth shut but - spriiings, what the hell? Maybe you missed the memo, but Rifftrax is not MST3K 2: Electric Boogaloo and the point isn't to make fun of bad movies, the point is to be FUNNY. Irregardless of Michael J. Nelson's true motives in starting up Rifftrax, as long as he keeps bringing the funny, he can rip on Citizen Kane for all I care.
IMHO.
And I'm excited about Cinematic Titanic too, but talking like Joel is the only real talent amongst them is just plain tacky. So is ripping on Canada, come to think of it.
You know when Joel was standing behind that desk being funny and awesome? There were other people crouched down by his knees also making with the funny! There were people behind Cambot who assisted in the funny! There were writers who came up with the funny in the first place!
Furthermore, if it weren't for Rifftrax and Film Crew, Joel probably never would have even bothered!

I can't get the short to play properly. Freezing up every couple seconds. Too much traffic? As far as the "rifftrax sucks" comment earlier, I strongly disagree. Rifftrax is the best thing to come out of MST yet.

That's not a real word Other than that I agree with your post completely! Oh well fine, Mr. Smarty McNitpick! I know, I just like using it. And thank you. ;D ...About the merchandise on the site, I actually think the Bot T-Shirt is kinda cute. I might get one, but probably wouldn't wear it on the street for fear of being pummled by random Msties. Then again, what a great way to meet other Msties! "Ah! I assume by the way you're whaling on me that you are a fellow Mstie! When you're through bloodying my nose, let's go get a smoothie and discuss our favorite episodes!"

My first thoughts were: "Gee, Crow is in a kayak, I wonder how long it'll take for him to fall in the water." Too bad that was the only punchline.
Now that I've collected my thoughts: I feel like it played like a bad host segment, minus the host, with crappy animation.
My final word: Jim, put the corpse of MST3K back in it's coffin and stop touching it's bathing suit area.

Well, November 5th, 2007 marks the return of new and official Mystery Science Theater 3000 material in the form of a flash-based animation found at the re-opened MST3K.com. By now, most, if not all, of the die-hards have viewed the short cartoon entitled, "Reel Livin'" along with the rest of the re-launched site. I'm not alone in expressing mixed feelings about the new angle Jim Mallon and Paul Chaplin have undertaken in bringing MST3K back to the public.
Let's start with the site itself. The design is nice and easy to navigate through. I like the new simplified style of the classic "moon logo" as the SOL makes it's orbit around it. But one must ask the question, where's the sound? No theme song to bring us onto the bridge of the SOL, nor any of the atmospheric environmental sound effects of the ship once we arrive. Hell, both Crow and Servo are equally as silent as they look and flail about the screen. Here, silence is not golden.
The new designs of the 'Bots are loose and simple. In fact, the individual "pieces" of the characters seem to float next to each other, without any genuine connection. It's South Park meets Play-Doh when it comes to the new designs.
Under Crow, we have three items found on the familiar "commercial sign" panel of buttons. So, where's the new stuff? Is it under videos? No, clicking that brings you to a series of links to very poor quality and heavily pixelated clips from the classic show. No, the new stuff is found as the "Current Event" link on the button panel. Current event, guys? Isn't there a better title for the new 'toons? I don't know, how about calling it, wait for it... "Movie Sign". That has a nice ring to it, don'tcha think?
But, I digress. Maybe this is still a work in progress and the lack of sound and video quality may be resolved. One can only hope.

Throughout the whole thing, I kept thinking to myself "Okay, it's gonna get funny now...right?"
Jim and Paul alone just don't have the same chemistry as they did when they were paired with Mike. Joel, Trace, Kevin, Frank, Bill, Mary Jo, and Bridget. The first short definitely reflects that - there's a strong sense of the humor trying to be as funny as MST3K was, but not succeeding. I suppose it doesn't help that it was fairly predictable - as soon as Servo went by in the background on the jet ski, I immediately went "Okay, he's gonna zoom by Crow and knock him off the kayak." And that isn't even all that funny, but it was made worse by the fact that it took forever to get there.
I wish the other Brains could pitch in on this. Future cartoons would definitely benefit from the participation of Mike or Trace or Kevin, and not just in terms of the writing. The bots aren't as funny when they're without a human companion - it's more fun when they have Mike or Joel to play off of. And the new voices for Crow and Servo make it sound like a project put together by some high school kids with no acting ability - even Paul's lines sound forced. Trace (or Bill) and Kevin know the subtleties of the characters, and how to make them react to certain situations. And furthermore, I really wish they'd gone with better character designs. Something more solid and three-dimensional, instead of the paper cut-outs that we ended up getting.
Let's face it, these characters aren't suited to Flash cartoons. They're suited to a brilliant TV show where they make fun of bad movies. And that TV show has run its course. So why bother bringing the characters back? It just doesn't work.

Okay, I finally was able to watch it, and while Crow's new Nanite voice is a little disconcerting, and the animation looks like it was done by a children's book illustrator - and not even a good one - I kind of enjoyed it. The fact that Crow was rambling on pointlessly about the wonder that is a sit-on kayak while Servo jetskied in the background was just funny enough.
As of right now, it's cute and chuckle-worthy. It's MST-lite, and I don't really mind, but I'm not in love with it either. But I'm going to hold out hope that it just needs time to find its swing...

It needs to be about Crow and Servo and Gyspy. I wouldn't call this MST3K-related as it should be (in my opinion) I doubt it can ever be anything like the 'bots we know, simply because only 2 people that were involved with the development are involved now. It's not like the 'bots because the right people aren't involved. (and by that I don't mean that Paul isn't the right person, I mean to say that there should be more 'right' people involved if it wants to become something funny.) But seeing how the MST days are over, perhaps I should just accept this as it is. Not everything can be funny to everyone. I was wondering if there would be any positive posts and there are now, so it is funny to some.
They might as well just make up new characters and used those instead of the 'bots. But that wouldn't sell shirts now would it? Glad I didn't get too excited about this.

I thought the short was okay. Nothing fantastic. I am kind of dissapointed with the way Crow looks. The website itself looks good in my opinion. It serves its purpose. I think the important thing to remember is that this is only day 1 for this. Look at any web-toon series. The first episode usually does not determine how the whole thing will go. It will probably take a little longer for things to really start going along and we get a good idea of where this is heading. And, on a smaller note, no mention of Cambot!
