yes, but in place of music-rights you have movie rights with MST...
That said, the SCTV box sets that were more expensive had more content than the MST sets. So that's a good sign. I've got one right here and it's 5 discs with 2 episodes a disc (the shows on this set were originally 90 minutes)
They probably won't be able to fit 2 MST's on a disc, but maybe we'll get 5 discs if they go the box set route? 4 episodes and a disc of extras? That'd be nice.
Though with all of the episodes that are likely to eventually repeat, I think I'd rather just see them release individual episodes, with maybe some "theme" box sets on occassion. So I can just skip over the repeats (unless they include the "turn down your lights" and "reel one" bits, then I'll happily rebuy everything)
Somebody else mentioned Shout's Elvira discs, and with how similar MST and Elivra are in a way, I'd imagine that Shout might go a similar route with MST in packaging and episode selection... (they're 2 movies a set, $15 retail)
sorry if this post is all over the place - its just a lot to think about

This is funny! I just mentioned how Shout! Factory should have the video rights to MST3K about a month ago. I just hope they don't make the screwed up decisions like they did with the SatAM set (As much as I love my loony Sonic fan brethren, the set looked like bootlegged DVD-Rs from an anime or comic con).
What I'll miss most about the Rhino sets will be the silly FBI warning.

if they go the volume route will they continue with a volume 13 or will there be two competing sets of numbers on my shelf? it could get mighty confusing if they start numbering all over again. still cant wait to see waht extras tehy cook up though the recent rhino sets weren't bad. We also better get that gila monster disc.

And thanks xmattxyzx !, I knew there were other good examples of Shout Factory's work so far . . . I'd forgotten about Home Movies. This is where MST belongs !

Hmmm, people are beginning to like the idea of single discs, and I'm beginning to agree. It would decomplicate things, if the rights are somehow screwed up or lost. Even a double disc episode could work, if they used the same syndicator for both (like Volume One did).

I vastly prefer single discs. I even liked it better when Rhino was doing the single VHS releases. I get raked over the coals with every Rhino box set, given that I always own at least one of the episodes already. Plus I'd prefer to have some control over which ones I buy and when.
It would, in fact, be nice to see Shout! release some of the Rhino releases as single discs. I never have been able to get a copy of Cave Dwellers because it's on a set full of episodes I already own. That way re-releases wouldn't inconvenience the fans, as they will if boxed in sets with new releases.

I heard someone mention how Shout!'s Elvira releases have 2 films and are $15. I vote for that avenue on the MST3K releases.

I don't think the single-disc route would be a good idea in todays market of TV-DVD box sets. They want to sell the show the best they can in stores with limited shelf space (Best Buy, FYE, etc). And a 4-episode box set would be a better deal depending on the SRP (especially if you order it online). As for rights, as long as Shout Factory does their homework there should be no problem (the only two Rhino sets to really go out of print were due to stupid reasons that could have easily been avoided with a little research). I heard someone mention how Shout!'s Elvira releases have 2 films and are $15. I vote for that avenue on the MST3K releases. Keep in mind they are inexpensive because Shout (for the most part) didn't secure the rights to the movies used.

I'd be shocked if MST3K was that cheap. I'd say the double episode would be a good release.Even put two out a month and make an offer if you buy both motivating stores to get them in. The less episodes in a release the more often they'd come I'd imagine!

I am quite happy with the 4 packs, I would just like to see them released more often.
