DVD supplier in multiyear pact for cult TV series

Call it "cult meets cult." Shout! Factory, the independent DVD supplier known for its affinity for cult movies and TV shows, has secured worldwide home entertainment and digital download rights to the long-running cult TV series "Mystery Science Theater 3000."
The multiyear deal gives Shout! Factory exclusive physical and electronic distribution rights to all "Mystery Science Theater 3000" branded properties -- including a vast library of original episodes that have never before been issued on DVD or available for digital download.
Garson Foos, president of Shout! Factory, said "Mystery Science Theater 3000" lines up perfectly with his company, which has released such eclectic offerings as [...] the direct-to-video "The Film Crew," a "Mystery Science Theater" spinoff.

Jim Mallon, president of Best Brains Inc. and a producer, director and writer of "Mystery Science Theater 3000," agreed that the TV show and DVD supplier make "a great fit."

What the hell?!?
I mean, I'm sure they'll do a great job and put a lot into these releases like nothing before, but what happened? Rhino was just starting to put in an extra effort into their DVDs over the past 2 years and they went through all the trouble of re-releasing Volume 10.
I guess it's just a bit weird.... I'm sure Shout! will do a great job though!

Their motivation might have something to do with the fact that 4 out of the Top 5 selling movies on Shout Factory (per their site) are... The Film Crew.

Hopefully this will work out better than Rhino.
I'll be happy if Shout Factory can get out unreleased episodes faster than Rhino. At the same time I'll be displeased if they go about re-releasing episodes already published by Rhino.

I totally respect Shout and have no problem with the trades/fan copies being done away with, but is that even possible? Sounds cool though, I hope it all works out.

WOW. So, if this is true, I take it Rhino's rights on MST3k are expiring this year?
Interesting how they say they plan on releasing every episode... that would be a dream come true! In general my likelihood list will stay the same (though I'd rather be proven wrong and a whole bunch more episodes get released!).
ShoutFactory I think will kick Rhino's ass in the extras department (as well as covers), the Yearbook Edition of Freaks and Geeks is easily the best TV series set ever.
