Watching Taxi Driver right now, I have to admit, this is probably better than Rocky. There has always been controversy over whether Rocky should have won the Academy Award. So I decide to start this poll on which was the best film of 1976.

As much as I like All the President's Men, I have to go with Taxi Driver. Dinero great in that movie.

I hate to go along with the majority, but I'm gonna say Taxi Driver too.

Taxi Driver. Scorsese and De Niro at their finest.

Nic Roeg's "The Man Who Fell To Earth." One of my all-time fav films.

This is a no-brainer in my opinion. Chalk another vote up for Taxi Driver.

Rocky. I never cared for Scorses' movies. Yeah, yeah, pile on Pete, sorry but I even prefer Kubrick over Martin. At least Stanley made some films that I love.
I don't like Scorses' subject matter, his characters. I can't name one f his mvies that I've seriously enjoyed. They all make me feel... icky.

MJ, we'd make a good critic team, because it seems like if we'd give totally opposite extreme views! I don't like all of Martin's movies (Gangs of New York SUCKED!!!). But I think he's a great director and has made some great, influential films. Yup, and if anyone wanted to put forth a detailed defense of his talent I couldn't argue against it. I simpy don't enjoy him on a purely emotional level. Never have; he has never touched or moved me in any way. I know that's wrong on a cinephile level - but for me, watching his films is like staring at a white wall for 2 hours.

I wonder has anyone actually seen Bound For Glory?
Taxi Driver wins my vote. Rocky is dated and silly but was so popular at the time and the academy never votes for something hard-edged like Taxi D.
I'd have to check what other films were released that year but Taxi stands out.

I feel nothing. Not excitement, anger, joy, shock... anything. Watching Scorsese is like watching paint dry for me it's the most 'nothng' experience of anything in the artistic/entertainment medium.
Goodfellas was, "Yawn, yeah, so what". At least Kurbrick brings out an emotion in me, wether it be great passion/empathy during Sparticus and Paths of Glory, or the anger I feel during Clockwork, at least Stanley pushes some buttons. I mention this because I've been tagged as a Kubrick hater when I'm actually a fan of at least, his early filmography. Scorsese's the real highy praised director I care nothing for.
Don't mean to diss him if you love him and I know I don't have an intellectual leg to stand on. It's simply on a personal level he's blah.

Taxi Driver, no contest. The best film of the seventies.
Honorable mention goes to Marathon Man. I don't think anyone had a better year than Hoffman did in 76'.

I've never seen Bound for Glory, but all of the other three nominees (Taxi Driver, All the President's Men, Network) were much, much better films than Rocky (which is a good movie, but just not even close to being on the same level of the other three). Rocky's win was one of the worst screw-ups in Oscar history, quite frankly.

I guess I'm screwy because I prefer Rocky to all of those you listed Don. Some movies are so much a part of their time, and I don't think it's a bad thing to reward that.
I rememer a reviewer talking about Titanic being that era's Gone With The Wind. It was romantic and captured the right audience at the right time. My mother recalls GWTW with awe and when she speaks of it, the star struck teenager in her peaks out (she loooved Gable). It's kind of sweet.
Rocky was the same way. Hell I started boxing because of that movie. It simply grabbed us all that year. So I'm glad it won, as I'm glad Titanic, GWTW and similar flicks won. I think the Oscars reflect not only the best movies, but the spirit of the times as well. Rocky did that better than any of them.

That's probably why How Green Was My Valley won over Citizen Kane. Remember Mighty Jack, I said this isn't what you think should won the Oscars, but what you thought was the best movie. There can be a difference, and I think that right there shows it.

Confidential, As Good As It Gets, and Good Will Hunting were all better movies IMO. In fact, if you look at the films released that year, L.A. Confidential and Boogie Nights are the ones that have stood the test of time. But for 1976, I think Rocky was deserving. I think the subsequent Rocky films have diminished the greatness of the original. People tend to forget that he didn't win at the end of the first one. It wasn't about a sports hero winning the big game. It was about a down and out loser who proved he could go the distance. It was about toughness and perseverence. Taxi Driver was about corruption and violence. Still a great movie, but I don't see it as being "high art" compared to the "cliched" Rocky.
