"Chinatown" is one of my all-time fav films, but I really like a lot of Polanski's work.
Mrs. Shep and I saw the first part of "Fearless Vampire Killers" the other night and were really impressed how beautifully shot that film is. Looking forward to finishing it.
Regardless what you think of Polanski's personal life, the man has created a pretty impressive body of work.
Come back to Hollwyood, Roman--God knows we need you!

I always liked "Lolita".
Oh wait, that wasn't one of his films...that was real life.
I concur with Shep: Come back to Hollywood, Roman. Serve your time like a man!
Oh, and I voted for Chinatown.

But he wants us to forgive him because he's a great artist! And I think we should! Wait. What am I saying? ??

I've only seen Rosemary's Baby and the Ninth Gate. And I hated the Ninth Gate. So I'll have to go with Rosemary's Baby.

And I hated the Ninth Gate. I didn't like "Ninth Gate" either. He also did a movie called "Death and the Maiden" that I thought was pretty bad. I'm not overly impressed with his works between "Tess" and "The Pianist."

I saw China Town not too long ago, and I wasn't sure what I thought about it - til I saw it again, and understood it was a masterpiece. "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown." Great closing line. Did you know Polanski himself plays the little guy who cuts Jack's nose with a switchblade? He also plays the assistant in "Fearless Vampire Killers," which is fun because you can see him fall in love with Sharon Tate onscreen. (who could blame him?--she was a hottie!)

Had to go with "Tess". I'm a sucker for period pieces.

Never saw Tess, but Kubrick said it was one of the greatest films ever made, so I'll check it out. I'm not surprised he liked it. His kind of historical film where the characters are absolutely trapped by the limits of their time period and circumstances. The first time I saw "Tess" I thought it was almost unbearably depressing, but with the next viewing I got an entirely different feel from it. It's definitely worth a look.

Holy crap, Donmac.
I am so sorry. I meant to quote your post and respond to your comment about the rape charges. But I accidentally deleted it.
I suck.

I was heavily under the influence of Fearless Vampire Killers when it came out in the 60's. Went to see it 3 times during its first theatrical release.
However, I really like Chinatown a lot more now. I've seen it in the theater and own it on DVD. My favorite Jack Nicholson role next to The Shining.

No contest Chinatown.
The last scene where Evelyn's head just lays on the steering wheel and you hear the sound of the horn echo throughout the town is one of the most haunting images I've ever seen in a movie.

So, I'm sure the majority of you are cringing because I voted for the Ninth Gate. But I picked this film solely because the dead, old broad in the wheelchair is the funniest piece of cinema I've ever seen!!

Polanski is hiding out in France, where he's protected against extradition back to America, where he's wanted for statutory rape of a 13 year old girl.
The crime allegedly took place back in the 70s (I think), and he's been hiding out ever since.
I'm sure a google search can give you more details.
Anyway, I have no respect for the man. He's a fugitive from justice and he's not man enough to stand up to face the consequences of his actions.
