Do you think the two 'Trekkies' films would count as Mockumentaries? Because I laughed my ass off through both of them.
On second thought, no. They were actually shot with actual people. Sorry for wasting the board's time with this.

I would encourage anyone to look for the lesser known ones. "Fear of a Black Hat" "And God Spoke..."
And from "Tap", after the Boston gig is cancelled due to lack of ticket sales.."I wouldn't worry, Boston isn't really a college town."
Just Harvard, MIT, Boston College to name a few.

Spinal Tap is the best!!!! I also like all the other Christopher Guest movies mentioned.
I just saw And God Spoke a few months ago and it was really good.
My husband had me watch a LDS mockumentary movie about a year ago, but I cannot remember the name of it. It was okay, he loved it. I think you may have to be morman to get alot of the jokes.

One of my favorite mockumentaries is called Forgotten Silver, co-directed by Peter Jackson. You may have to do a little searching to find it, but it is well worth it.
Spinal Tap is also excellent.

All those Christopher Guest mockumentaris (Tap, Guffman, Best In Show, Mighty Wind) are excellent. Great casts, too!

24 Hour Party People (punk/new wave- fact-based, but still in the same vein) I don't think this counts as a mockumentary. True, 24-Hour Party People does break the 4th-wall every once in a while as the main character directly addresses the audience, Pretty good film though, especially if you're a die-hard Joy Division fan like me. Plus, it stars Alan "A-ha!" Partridge himself, Steve Coogan, in a more serious role.

I just found out that the new Christopher Guest mockumentary has begun shooting. It's called "For Your Consideration" and is a sendup of awards shows like the Oscars.
That's funny enough. But the real kicker? Joining the usual Christopher Guest Players will be none other than Ricky Gervais of "The Office".
Oh baby.

At one time, Guest was working on a film about these rich guys at an exclusive men's club who beat drums and cry, but it hasn't materialized yet. Apparently it's based on an actual club and some of the members weren't too happy, so he may have bailed on the project because of a potential lawsuit.

I liked the early part of the movie with Joy Division (I'm a big fan too), but hated the Happy Mondays segment because that whole band was a bunch of obnoxious louts! (I'm glad I never got into their music!)

Definetly "The Rutles".
Classic mockumentary that flopped on SNL but still holds up well. They wrote some pretty good music for it too, considering it wasn't really serious.

Last Broadcast is a mockumentary (that word still sounds like a joke to me) about a documentary maker doing a film about a group of guys form a local community access network who go out searching for the Jersey Devil. It's been on IFC recently.
Besides this the only mockumentary i think i've seen is a short called Deathdealer: A Documentary, featuring Henry Rollins who plays death as a door-to-door salesman. I liked both.

There is a film called Man Bites Dog, a French film, which I have not seen, about a camera crew who follow a killer around. They slowly become involved in the killings. Supposed to be disturbing. Has anyone seen it? Is it worth watching? Yes! Very wonderful film. It's pretty much a successful version of what Oliver Stone tried to do with Natural Born Killers. Not that I don't enjoy NBK, but I think Man Bites Dog is definitely more of a social commentary whereas NBK was just wacky film fun with attempts at being serious. Definitely not for the faint of heart though. The violence doesn't exactly permeate the entire film, but when it does happen it's pretty brutal and gruesome. But yeah, I highly recommend adding it to your collection, or at least checking it out.
