The Academy is notorious for very seldom getting it right, so the only movies on this list I would be surprised to see get a vote are Silence of the Lambs, Unforgiven, and Schindler's List.

People complain a lot about the oscars as if they were the grammys. But normally even when they make mistakes, they normally don't screw up as bad as other awards show do. Most of the movies are at least pretty good. People complained about the oscars and they do screw up but if like the grammy people were running, movies like Spider Man would be winning best picture. Although they were grammiesque when Gladiator won.

Geez, this was hard because I thought a lot of those movies were really overrated if not downright terrible (Gladiator, Titanic, Dances With Wolves -- Kevin Costner, ugh!). I remember being underwhelmed by The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love, which weren't horrible, just not very memorable. I really liked Chicago, but I don't think it deserved Best Picture. And I LOVE Silence of the Lambs, and I think it kicks so much ass that it won. In the end, I voted for Forrest Gump, because it's just a reprehensible piece of celluloid. There, I said it and I'd say it again if I had to.

Had to go with English Patient, couldn't get through even 1/2 hour of it. If it was a chick flick it was totally lost on me. As for all the others, guess I'm not very discerning, cuz I liked them all and would see (most) of them again, if given the chance.

Shakespeare In Love beating both Saving Private Ryan and Elizabeth for best picture killed any mild interest I might have ever had in the Academy Awards.

I really can't stand the Academy Awards anymore and this category is one of the reasons....the movies they pick for "Best Picture" a lot of the time......I just don't get it.
"Titanic"....c'mon, this is the movie that got my vote....what a suckfest (other than the boat goin down)
I actually enjoyed "Forrest Gump" but it was NO WHERE NEAR as good as "Shawshank Redemption"
I have to agree with Gypsy above...."Saving Private Ryan" was a FAR BETTER movie than "Shakespeare in Love"
Some of the others in this list also that I really didn't like...."American Beauty", "Million Dollar Baby", "A Beautiful Mind"...."Chicago.........uugghh

Titanic got my vote. My ex and I laughed our butts off when all the people who thought they were safe in the water got half a boat dropped on them. If I had to pick a best piture from that year it would be Good Will Hunting. But the other noms were LA Confidential, As Good As It Gets, and The Full Monty. Saving Private Ryan was the best of its year, and I agree that Forrest Gump was the 4th best movie that year.

I had to throw down against Gump even though Titannick deserves the honor almost as much, if only for the fact that it was my memories and background they mined for Gump. I hate when they do that.

I say "Titanic", because the funniest line in the whole film came from this blond woman leaving the theater; "I can't believe that the boat sank..." ;D

It's between Titanic and American Beauty.
Titanic was long, boring, and void of any intellect.
American Beauty was shorter, just as boring, and full of "phoned in intellect".
I'd have to go with... American Beauty. It was alot more annoying. It's a movie for psuedo intellectuals to say they like so they feel smart, and they discuss the deeper "meanings" of the movie as if they were not so damn obvious.
American Beauty fans did it for me. It gets my vote, and not Titanic. The movie sucks, don't even bother defending the Cliche ridden garbage.
