Various debates have raged over the years on the importance of film school in allowing one to enter the film industry. Of course, examples can be offered from both sides, as directors George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola graduated from prestigious film schools, whereas Quentin Tarantino had no formal film training. The rapid rise of independent filmmaking and digital video have changed this debate somewhat, as anyone with a few thousand dollars can shoot their own film (and some have done so quite successfully) with little formal knowledge of the industry.
Wikipedia- Film School
This could make for an interesting argument, and in fact has effected me. As some of you know, I’m nearing the end of high school, and I really have no idea what direction I should go in. A University? Film School? Clown College? I know the university seems too far away for me, but would probably crush my parents the most. The Film School is what I was thinking of, but now this little argument comes up, and seems to be making a good point.
I mean, I will not have a lot of money when I get out of highschool (remember I have NO job) and if I do end up doing good at film school, where do I go from there? I don’t have any money to make a movie. Sure, I could find investors, but I could probably do that without going to film school. I can’t even get a decent job now, even where lousy immigrants work (yeah, I said it, I don’t care, I’m pissed). Should I just skip film school and try to make a movie ASAP? Get a script, take my little money, try and find investors to get more (but then not as much) money. I mean, I do know a good amount about film making, and maybe a book would help fill out my college. Kind of nice getting for $20, what costs others thousands.
What kind of movie should I make? I’ve been juggling two ideas (well, I guess that’s just jugging). One is kind of what you would find today at a Cannes or Sundance film festival (but attempting to be different in some ways), the other is more of a horror type movie (let’s say like the Evil Dead, NO I AM NOT COMPARING MYSELF TO SAM RAIMI, DO NOT GET THAT IMPRESSION, THAT’S JUST THE BEST WAY I COULD THINK OF PUTTING IT). I actually have a pretty good premise and plot for the second movie, and not too much for the first (I’ve kind of had a writers block there). It seems like the first type has more potential to be accepted or seen by bigger types, for better movies.
I know these may seem like stupid questions to most, but can we not try and spam up the thread. I’m looking for some real advice, yes, on a message board. Thank You.
This is all so complicated, maybe I should go to Clown College.
