I can only think of one good remake: John Carpenter's The Thing. Other than that, none of them were worth it. I agree with you about The Thing. I loved both the original and the remake kicked butt. As for John Carpenter's The Thing remake, I remember it got hammered by critic when it was first released in 1982, and it did terrible at the box office. Only in the years after that, mainly due to home video, was the movie recognized for being a great masterpiece of horror.

I'm actually looking forward to this remake, the trailers looked pretty creepy. I'm not a huge fan of the original though so that could be why. I've heard that the story is close to the original so thats always a good sign.

I'm still skeptical. The imdb audience isn't giving it rave reviews, and they like some pretty crappy movies.

IMO John Carpenter's The Thing sucked major ass. As for remakes better than the original, Red Dragon was superior to Manhunter.

My review:
The Omen (2006) **
I wasn’t as against this remake as much as say The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so I went in with fingers crossed hoping at least to be marginally entertained. What I got was a straightforward and competent remake of the 1976 Richard Donner classic, but it lacks the punch of the original. If you’ve seen the original, you’ve pretty much seen this one, except for the gratuitous “scare” nightmare scenes (and the fact that it’s not as good), as they used the exact same script by David (Prophecy) Seltzer. This time instead of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick raising the Antichrist, it’s Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles. The great gory death scenes from the ’76 version have been given a CGI facelift, though not always for the better. While the decapitation of David (Basic Instinct 2) Thewlis is crowd pleasing, and the lightning pole through Pete (The Lost World: Jurassic Park) Postlethwaite is kinda nifty, but the computer generated monkey attack is pretty weak. The performances are all sturdy and John (Behind Enemy Lines) Moore’s direction is proficient, but in the end it feels more like a publicity stunt (it was released on June 6, 2006, or 6/6/6) than an honest to goodness horror movie. The supporting roles are effectively cast. Mia Farrow is great as Ms. Baylock the evil nanny, (she should know a thing or two about raising demonic kids after Rosemary’s Baby). The best part for me was seeing Italian horror icon Giovanni (The Gates of Hell) Radice (AKA: John Morghen) who shows up briefly and carrying out his long tradition of getting mutilated.

I went and saw it and I must admit that I did enjoy it. I like Liev Schreiber anyway, so his being in the movie didn't hurt. I guess I could call this a guilty pleasure movie for me.
