I'm a huge Tarkovsky fan as well....have seen and love all his films.
Robert Bresson, despite having a strong following, remains sadly overlooked by even people who are really into or open to seeing foreign films. He is the God of cinema to me.
Also, saw Mike Leigh's Naked again not too long ago. A great great film.

"Solaris" (Russian) is my fave foreign film of all time. It haunts me to this day. I still haven't seen this one, I plan on picking it up ASAP though. Did you enjoy Andrei Rublev? Great film! Also be sure to check out "The Mirror" and "Stalker." Losingmydignity recommended those to me and he was absolutely correct.

A sampling of some foreign films I like: Anything by Mike Leigh, especially Naked, Life Is Sweet, Vera Drake and Kiss of Death Anything by Alan Clarke, especially Scum Downfall (Der Untergang, German) La Ceremonie (French) Red Lights (French) Belle du Jour (French) I'm Not Scared (Italian) Any of Dario Argento's older films, especially Suspiria, Tenebrae, Inferno or Profondo Rosso (Deep Red) Talk to Her (Spanish) Bad Education (Spanish)
I'm sure I could think of a lot more, but that's all for now.

For some reason, I've only seen foreign WW2 movies. Two are German, and two are Russian films, but all are very good.
Das Boot Stalingrad
Both are excellent and ironically are anti-war movies. They pull no punches and don't glamorize battle at all.
The Russian films are
I Was 19(about a Russian soldier who helps the Germans, thinking that they will win the war) Come and See(a young boy wants to go off and fight the Germans, not realizing how terrible war is) Those are also very good films.

Two I would add that I haven't seen mentioned are:
Cinema Paradiso and La Femme Nikita

Metropolis Nosferatu M Jean Renoir's Beauty and the Beast The Man in the White Suit La Femme Nikita (although I do question how you can shoot someone in the leg point blank and later they not only can walk just fine but there's not even a scar)
And if British films count, what about Hammer films?
Quatermass and the Pit (a/k/a Five Million Years to Earth)

And if British films count, what about Hammer films? I love those movies. I'm in the middle of reading the autobiography of Christopher Lee now. Great stuff.

Once upon a time about 1998/99 I saw this movie called "Cemetery Man". It's an Italian flick. I don't think it's available in the US. It used to be available on VHS in the US. I wish they would release the En version on DVD in the US. Check it out: www.imdb.com/title/tt0109592/

One of my favorite all time movies and the chick in it was just blazing hot.
