I'm not the most frequent member on this board but I do check in every now and then. So, forgive me if this topic has already been brought up.
So what's the best foreign film you've seen? I just got Netflix and am ready to expand my knowledge of foreign films.
P.S....kindly guide me to the thread if this has been asked before!

I really enjoyed the original Nosferatu. Max Schreck was a genius.
If British films count, I'll add 28 Days Later to my list.

Goran Markovic's 'Tito and Me' ranks up there. Just saw it today, and it's a funny and very interesting film.

I watch practically zero foreign films, but "Life is Beautiful" is one of the few I've watched and it was good.

Of the ones I've seen I'd have to say my favorite is La Dolce Vita. I think I'm one of the few that liked it more than 8 1/2. Don't get me wrong, 8 1/2 was still awesome and well worth watching. I also greatly enjoyed Andrei Rublev which is considered by many to be the most boring film of all time but I think it is a masterpiece. The 400 Blows, Yojimbo, Amelie, and Italian For Beginners are others which I enjoyed. If you haven't seen a foreign film give it a try but remember just because it's foreign doesn't mean it's bad and just because it's foreign doesn't mean it's good. Also remember there is a fine line between cinephile and movie snob.

I watch practically zero foreign films, but "Life is Beautiful" is one of the few I've watched and it was good. Sorry to throw a bucket of cold water on you, but I detested LiB. You want a story of the Holocost? Judgment at Nuremburg says it all. With far better acting and story. As far as my favorite foreign films, Kurosawa is tops: especially Throne of Blood. (His lady Macbeth is truly frightening.) La Dolce Vita was one of my faves, but a recent viewing shows that it does not hold up as well as some of Fellinni's other work. Probably one of the all time greatest foreign films is Jean Renoir's Rules of the Game. If you've never seen it, seek it out. You'll see from whence Robert Altman got his inspiration. And Renoir's La Belle et La Bete (Beauty and The Beast) is TRULY a beautiful, magical experience - especially when experienced projected in a theater. |

Old Boy. hands down the best foreign film i have ever seen. There is some subject matter that will make some people cringe (i can't tell what it is because it will give it away) but the ending catches you WAY off guard. Besides the great ending (i like endings that come out of nowhere and yet make so much sense), the rest of the film is really good. I believe that the DVD has a dub now but watch it with the subtitles, the acting by the main guy is great.

If you're into Spanish films, Átame is interesting (It has Antonio Banderas, pre-American movies). I have seen My Life as a Dog (Swedish?), but that was so long ago...my Grandpa always raved about the Bicycle Thief (I think it's Italian) and check out the Criterion collection, there are a lot of foreign films on that list. "La Vita é Bella" or Life is Beautiful is a touching story, although not an accurate depiction of the Holocaust, so don't expect any Schindler's List-esque material.

"Solaris" (Russian) is my fave foreign film of all time. It haunts me to this day.
Beyond Tarkovsky's work, I also love "The Virgin Spring," "The Seventh Seal," "Aguirre: The Wrath of God," "Seven Samurai" and "Open Your Eyes."
