National Treasure. I've been told that it's similar to the book.

National Treasure. I've been told that it's similar to the book. If you mean that it's a cheesy, nonsensical pseudo-mystery with hollow characters, and no depth, following a conspiracy theory based on famous documents and totally baseless, made-up "history", then yes. It's very similar. But once you turn your brain off, NT was a pretty fun movie.

To be honest, I'd prefer a tabasco enema as an alternative to ANYTHING related to the Da Vinci Code.
I'm a constant reader and will pretty much devour anything that isn't tied to a big stick in the library but that 'book' made me so angry I could have ripped my own legs off. The idea of watching the movie brings me out in hives.
And this has nothing to do with the religious angle (I'm an atheist). I just hate bad writing, and giving your principal character a Mickey Mouse watch does NOT count as character development.
Can't believe that actual TREES were cut down to produce the 10 gazillion copies of this thing that have been sold. Why would people bother?>!?!
*rant over*

I'd love to see The Mohammed Code or The Scientology Code (aka The Cruise Code). I guarantee no-one in H'wood would have the guts to touch those.

Interesting plot coupled with bad writing. Still, I'll go and see the movie. Ron Howard and Tom Hanks can't possibly disappoint, and Audrey Tatou is hot. Win win.

Someone whose opinion I respect highly said DvC was one of the most poorly written pieces of crap that he had ever wasted his time on. I thanked him for the warning, making a note NEVER to waste my time reading it, and went back to Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon.

I once got into a conversation with a woman in our church who wanted to know which was a worse influence on Christians: Harry Potter or "The Da Vinci Code".
I told her that the "Left Behind" series was the worst influence.
However, "The Da Vinci Code" wasn't far behind. I agree with everyone else here that the real danger of Da Vinci is the atrocious writing, and not merely the horrible theology (which is bad).
The exact wording I told the woman was, "I could crap into a fountain pen and end up with a better novel."

It's the old Dave Barry rule: "If you try to publish a book about how Harry Truman was a president who made a few mistakes but was later vindicated by history you will be kicked out of every publishing company in the nation. However if you write a book about how you've discovered that Harry Truman was actually a Communist ballerina, people will gladly give you their publishing!"
People don't care about the quality and the Davinci Code, all they care about is the controversy.

People don't care about the quality and the Davinci Code, all they care about is the controversy. I think I agree with that. The difference between Indiana Jones' bad history and The Davinci Code's bad history is that IJ didn't try to disprove what people call true today. By basically siding with various gnostic interpretations instead of what's in the New Testament, it's a recipe for instant media attention. All IJ did was take possible "gaps" in history and fill in the blanks with improbabilities, as opposed to replacing historical beliefs.

Interesting plot coupled with bad writing.... Ever try Decipher by Stel Pavlou? One of his reviews called him "a Dan Brown who can write". BTW, the AP review of the movie is that it's a rushed, suspenseless thing with a slightly different ending....everything that's usually wrong with most books turned into movies.
