This was a movie made in 1950 which stars Humphrey Bogart.
While other Bogart films like Casablanca and the African Queen receive bigger press, I think this is one of the best movies and best performances of his career.
He plays a screenwriter with a violent streak, who is accused of murder. And the balance he strikes in his acting is beautiful. There are times when he can be very tender, but there's this dark side to him which flares up in frightening ways.
Gloria Grahame plays the woman he falls in love with - and she's stellar as well.
Nicholas Ray directed and he doesn't compromise on the story for commercial appeal. This is a sad, heartbreaking love story - with a couple of nice, insightful jabs at the film industry.
Great, great movie. If you've never seen it, I'd recommend it highly. It also has one of the best lines ever found in a screenplay...
"I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived for a few weeks while she loved me." - Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart)

This has always been a favorite of mine, and I'll put it on every time it's on TCM.
