That is LAME. I wanted to get the original on DVD, and I found out it is completely out of print. All you can get is the inferior Michael Bay remake for now. Apparently there is a special edition coming out in September, but that is still aggravating. I don't know, there's just something wrong about the fact that you can only get the remake of a classic film. By the way, I was inspired by the Clockwork Orange post about it being out of print. It immediately made me think of how irritated I got when I found out T.C.M was out of print recently.

Is it having an anniversary of some sort soon? There might be a whiff of "special edition" in the air.

I have the "Special Edition" too.
It's a good DVD, I see no point in making a new version.

There's a 2 disc version coming out on the 26th of September. It's being put out by Dark Sky which just did the excellent DVD of Magic. If they do as well on TCM as that one, it will be worth the wait.

I can get the one that's out of print on Ebay for less than $10, but a two disc version just might be worth waiting for. I've been burned enough times buying one version of a film only to have the "super duper new and improved" version come out not long after, so I have to buy it again. Not this time.

Know what you mean. I'm going through the same thing with Forbidden Planet. There's some people who say it's out of print but you can still buy it - meanwhile there's all these rumors that a Special Edition is in the works... It sucks.

Just wondering. How many hours can an HDDVD hold? What does that matter? They'll still only put on one disc what they want to. Remember the big selling point to get us to switch from vinyl to CDs was how many hours of material they could hold....and then they go ahead and release double albums like Tommy and The Beatles White album (and the red and blue collections) on two disc sets....and charge "accordingly".

The blooper reel is already on the other special edition, the only funny part was when the girl fell in the chair.
