I just had to share this story. My girlfriend, while aware with my obsession with MST3K has never quite "gotten it." She's seen clips, but tends to only pay attention during the host segments, which, to the outside observer (no pun intended) must seem hopelessly low-budget and campy (which of course they are) So, while I'm sure she respects my taste deep-down (she does, doesn't she?!?) all I seem to get by way of feedback is an occasional "Oh my god, that is soooo cheesy!" along with the occasional chortle. So be it.
Then one day recently, I had my chance. We were just sitting there on the couch, watching T.V., when she (being an avid horror movie fan) requested that I pop in the DVD for "Halloween." I generally only watch that movie once a year (in late October, fittingly) but I decided to indulge her random request. Little did she know what I *really* had planned!
After a bit of running around ("looking for the DVD," I explained) I returned with the disc, and a cleverly concealed Ipod hooked up to some portable speakers, cued up to a certain "Rifftrax" segment. (I think you can see where this is going)
I let the movie start, and started up the ipod, but kept the volume down for the first few minutes, letting her get into the movie. Rifftrax often have extended gaps (20 or 30 seconds or so) in the audio, so at a certain point, I discretely notched the volume up. Eventually, she became aware that there were "other voices" whose comments seemed to eerily reflect what was on screen! Several "groans" and "oh brothers!" later, she was on board. It was a perfect way for her to be unsuspectingly dragged into the world of movie riffing, and I'm happy to report that she often catches herself "riffing" with me on just about everything from TV commercials to the nightly news.
Thanks, Rifftrax!
