They're going to hit this one out of the park. My hopes are higher for this than they've been for any other individual release (since MST), including The Film Crew and CT, and I'm not at all nervous that they won't deliver. I can't wait!

Yes! I was hoping they'd do this after hearing about their live retooling of it.

Woooo! I am all for any older movies they want to do. I've never seen Plan 9 with Mike's commentary, but it definitely lives up to the hype on its own.

I have the Legend DVD, and while I liked Mike's solo effort on this one, I'm salivating at the prospect of all three savaging this "film".

I've got a question: As you know, I don't normally do long, detailed reviews for RiffTrax. But would it be fair to do a review for both on this one and compare? ie - Have a review for the Mike Solo AND the new 3 person version all at once. Or should I just review the new 3 person version? Does anyone even care?

I don't think it would be a bad idea -but- keep in mind it's apples and oranges, while Mike was drifitng into more riff than commentary mode by the time he did Plan 9, these commentary tracks still took on a different vibe. Saying that, it'll be nice to hear a full out riff assault on this one. I wonder if they'll reuse any of Mikes old jokes?

Now that they have competition I suspect that we can see some changes in the way rifftrax runs their operation. I suspect that the trax will take longer to write and they’ll be higher quality.
I also suspect that we can see more cheesy movies as opposed to big Hollywood blockbusters, with a new emphasis on the VOD. They might also go back and re-do some of the other Mike titles since they’ve now set the precedent with this one. Just a prediction.

I tend to agree with most of what you say except the part about it taking longer to write/release a trax. In my opinion, I think they will still be able to turn out trax at the same rate. Basically they don't have to wait for it to be put on DVD; they can release right away to MP3 download. I think this is why I like RiffTrax: because they are so fast at releasing trax. Also another thing to remember: RiffTrax doesn't need to wait for permission to riff on a movie. This helps speed things up too. I hope they mix it up a bit more with their choices of movies and throw a few more older flicks in the loop and I think they've been starting to do that lately.

I wonder if they'll reuse any of Mikes old jokes? Yes, they started with that script and then reworked it.

Wow, I'm excited about this one too. It will definitely be cool to see a change of pace in Rifftrax by doing an older cheesy movie as opposed to a newer cheesy movie. Although we've already seen this trend beginning with things like the Star Wars Holiday special. And, even for MST3K purists, movies don't HAVE to be old to be enjoyable in the riffed format. Some of MST3K's episodes were movies that were only a few years old when the Brains got their hands on them, one of them being an all-time fan favorite in Time Chasers, but there were a number of others.
Pardon the digression. I'm excited about Plan 9! I haven't seen Mike's solo Plan 9 outing, as I wasn't too impressed by the solo one's he has done (not slamming Mike in the least, I just really think you need a couple people to be able to interact to truly make this thing enjoyable). So in answer to your question gammer, I'd love to see your reviews of both versions. I'd like to hear how it compares doing the same movie with one person and then with three. I think it's safe to say the new version will be much better, but it'd be nice to see a concrete comparison of the two by someone.
Also, are there any plans to make this commercially available? After all, Legend and Mike have worked together quite a bit, and they already released a commercial version of Plan 9 among many other movies. And all 3 have worked with Legend on the Stooges. It would be fantastic to see them release another version of Plan 9 with this new commentary. Maybe ti could include both Mike solo and then all 3 riffers.

In fact, I think you should review all the Legend releases. I'd love to read your thoughts on the Stooges and the giant, carnivorous plant one (can't think of the name and I'm too proud to look it up). Your reviews of the two different Plan 9s will be interesting to compare.
