Yay! I finally saw The Tubes!!They are a smaller band now playing in smaller venues, but they are great as ever, Roger Steen is a superb guitarist, Rick Anderson on bass, Prairie Prince on drums (we miss you Vince Welnick, rip) and of course Fee Waybill. It was an amazing concert, lots of fun. The guys sound and look great... though Fee is showing his age. In fact he's starting to look a little like Shemp Howard. Yes, he did come out as Quay in those giagantic platform shoes, and yes, I was chanting along with everyone else as they played "White Punks on Dope" It took a while but I finally got to see them. I'm a happy lad. Was working in a record store in the 70s, and they came into the store, and we all saw them that night. It was the "Young and Rich" tour! They're hysterical.

saw Ray Manzarek and Robby Kieiger of The Doors sunday night. They used a lead singer who definately nails all of Morrison's vocals very authentically. Opened the show with Roadhouse Blues, the audience hoisting their beer cans in unison. They did When The Music's Over, Peace Frog/Blue Sunday, Love Me Two Times, Strange Days, L.A. Woman,Not To Touch The Earth(possibly my favorite of the night)Five To One, Touch Me, Love Her Madly, Spanish Caravan(with a lengthy Krieger flamenco guitar introduction), Back Door Man and an encore of Riders on the Storm and Light My Fire. As we were all waiting in line before the show-the line trailing out the main entrance and out into the parking lot, there was Ray just sitting near the door talking with anyone who felt like coming up, taking pictures with them etc. A constant highlight of the show was Kriegers guitar playing. This show just reinforced for me what a collection of great songs The Doors left us. They could have done a second show right after this one, using different Doors songs and it still would have been as memorable. tears came to my eyes listening to lyrics.... House upon the hill Moon is lying still Shadows of the trees Witnessing the wild breeze
The mansion is warm, at the top of the hill Rich are the rooms and the comforts there Red are the arms of luxuriant chairs And you won't know a thing till you get inside
Dead president's corpse in the driver's car The engine runs on glue and tar Come on along, not goin' very far To the East to meet the Czar
Some outlaws lived by the side of a lake The minister's daughter's in love with the snake Who lives in a well by the side of the road Wake up, girl, we're almost home

Wednesday night I went and saw My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, who were forking awesome. I also saw half of the opening band (they were called Blownload. I know. But they were pretty good). The headliners were Lords of Acid, who I'm kind of meh about. Me and my friend only stayed for one song, and then we both said "meh" together and went to the goth club down the street to spend the rest of the evening buying drinks that weren't $7. Good times. :-)

October. Dodge Theater, Phoenix. Gorillaz - Escape to Plastic Beach. *Thud*
I just got wind that my friend back home in the SF bay area is going to see *drum roll* Testament! I had to inquire if canes and respirators would be involved. Wow.. Testament?! They put on a great show (smaller venue the better), but really?! Didn't half of them form a lite-metal Christmas band a few years back. I wouldn't think there was any recovering from that.

I've just got tickets to go see Eels and Madness (not on the same night).
Supposedly the new Eeals album is more upbeat than the one they released earlier this year, End Times, so hopefully should be a fun show.
I'm starting a fitness regime for all the jumping and dancing that will have to be done at Madness now, the gig's not until November.

If I can save up the scratch, I'm hopefully going to see Gary Numan on October 17th (first time seeing him) and Bad Religion on October 30th (probably fourth or fifth time seeing them). Yippee!!!

Eels gig was fantastic, nothing like the new album which is upbeat lyrically but very subtle musically. The show saw E in a white jumpsuit and bandanna with his now customary big beard and after a couple of acoustic numbers to open he brought out the band and rocked way harder then you'd expect from an Eels show. Plus there were radical reworkings of some oldies too. Great gig.
Went to see Isobell Campbell and Mark Lanegan last night. A quiet, relaxed type of gig. Very nice atmosphere, apart from the barstaff who chose to operate the ice machine every time the noise level dropped. They're such a strange pairing and yet it works so well. She's a Glaswegian who used to be in Belle And Sebastien before leaving to make Americana records and somehow ended up working with Lanegan, who's voice works perfectly with the material her and her band makes. Quite funny watching them together as he's this dark, growling cloud of a presence and she's all bubbly and sweet.
To add to seeing Madness I've also added seeing The Jim Jones Revue to my list. They're playing King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow next month, the night I come back from my mate's stag do in Liverpool. Should be a rocking night and I should be suitably inebriated. If you haven't heard them, check them out. Best way to describe it is if someone found a badly maintained demo tape recorded in someone's cramped garage of The Stooges covering Little Richard. Mind blowingly excellent!

saw Shonen Knife last night- 3 petite women from Japan who rocked the place and signed autographs after. it's nice to see a band up onstage with big smiles during the performance rather than the usual smugness.

Jim Jones Revue were incredible on Sunday. Blasted through their set of rock 'n' roll at breakneck speed and I didn't stop dancing like a crazy bloke once.
If you haven't heard them then welcome to your new favourite band:
