If you dig her that cool, I'm not putting anyone down who derives pleasure and is entertained by her music. So, nothing personal here.
But I can't stand her, never could. And I can't stand how the media paints her as this great innovator. I ask, what did she do, and the reply is about the way she changed her look and about her attitude.
And that has what to do with musical talent? So if I go on stage and do something radical, say take a dump on the stage, that would suffice for talent and I'd be hailed as an innovator and make millions too? And all this time I wasted trying to become a better songwriter? (and before he's mentioned, even Bowie the chameleon earned praise for his musical skills)
I guess she's in the hall for her commercial impact, her influence. We can all pat her on the back and thank her for the likes of Britney Spears. But for women of rock who really did something for music, I prefer to salute an Amie Mann, whose championed the cause of independent musicians and performers.

So if I go on stage and do something radical, say take a dump on the stage I believe G.G. Allin already beat you to that. Madonna. Meh. I have a friend who's REALLY into her (mostly her eighties stuff), and I'll admit to having bought a couple of her albums way back when. Some of her stuff is all right, but it isn't rock music. It's dance music. Now, if the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame wanna be all inclusive and stuff, I guess that's up to them. But it does kind of frost my Wheaties that there are way more deserving rock bands from the eighties (who actually wrote all of their own songs) who have not yet been inducted. So while I'm not going to get too het up about it, it is still rather irritating.

Miles Davis and Grandmaster Flash are in, so why not Madonna? I'm no great fan either, but I recognize her long-lasting success and lasting influence, and I feel she should be because of that.
Now, Iggy and the Stooges performing her songs at the ceremony — that was freakin' cool!

I'm still stunned The Smiths didn't get in (I believe this was their first eligible year). Not that Morrissey would have showed up anyway. LOL
And I'm with Lincoln Hayes in that I'll take Aimee Mann over Madonna any day of the week.

By the time he did Live/Evil he was into fusion. ANYTHING with Iggy and the Stooges covering it is fine by me!

The term "Rock &Roll" Hall of Fame is too limiting, it should just be "Popular Music". And Grandmaster Flash and Miles Davis definitely deserve to be in because they are two innovative artists who also appealed to a great many people. As Lincoln Hayes asked, what's innovative about changing your look every so often? It's not. Same with Madonna's changes in musical style. What she is is very good at reading "cool", or at least she was. Her fashions and music reacted to others who developed them but she was savvy enough to adopt them before they exploded into the popular culture. Whether she was part of the reason for that is open to debate. The problem lies in the fact that all of Madonna's music is made by other people. Her talent seems to be in saying "French House is in right now so I'll get someone making that to work with me so i'm up with the zeitgeist". Her powers to keep up have waned over the last few years though and her attempts at cool just sound about two years too late every time.
Rant over. If they are recognising her popularity then she does deserve in, just don't feed us this innovation bull. If that's really the case Kraftwerk would be in there (I'm not holding my breath).

again, well said. i was into madonna a bit back in the '80's because i believe it was some kind of rule at the time. but i lost interest in her sometime after 'like a prayer' came out. i might still shake ass to her on a dance floor if the opportunity presents itself, but i don't get her being hall of fame material. and live/evil is one of my favorite works by miles.

An actual and very influential rock band, no less! But yeah, Moz would probably think it was all terribly twee and slag the whole thing off. Hee hee!

Yeah. Change the name of the place to:
Pop Music Hall of Fame-
And nobody would get upset.
I agree. The XTC and Smiths/Morrisey omissions are an insult. When will Boingo be eligible? Because I heard "Only A Lad" yesterday and it reminded me of how great/innovative they were. Saw 'em 3 times myself, always excellent. Super-tight, too.
Props to Madonna for "Vogue" on two points: The see-through tops in the video (can't be bad) and as a source of future riffs. (see Cinematic Titanic)
