If you've ever been to Austin Texas' South By Southwest (SXSW) music festival, you know what a big deal this week-long event is down here (there is also film and interactive happenings). Most bands are unsigned and do the club circuit and/or are looking for a label usually independent in nature and the city is swarming with label reps to help them do just that. Music genres, among others, include rock, punk, alternative country, folk, heavy metal and reggae. And most of these bands and artists have offered at least one of their songs for free : 2008 SXSW Showcasing ArtistsLook for the cassette symbol that indicates an MP3 track is being offered. And each artist page includes a Flash player that lets you preview the entire track before you download it. ----> To make looking for your kind of music easier, if you click on the genre listing in the right-hand column, the page will rearrange itself to list bands of only that music type. FYI: most of the tracks I have downloaded use the 160kbps to 192kbps format so they can sound good-to-very good. Thankfully most of the music at SXSW is original stuff and not the formulaic and blah junk filling up the airwaves being sent out by the big corporate stations. Quite a few bands that are familiar to people who don't listen to Ms. Spears and N-Sync play at SXSW, even though they already have established carreers, simply because it is so fun to be there. Have fun! P.S. despite the internet nature of this post, don't forget Record Store Day on April 18.
