Courtesy Sat. News: Cinematic Titanic
So what is Cinematic Titanic? In a nutshell, Joel and the gang have secured the rights to 12 bad, MST-quality films. They will all be writing and performing new riffs, with silhouettes. The plan is to offer downloadable and burnable DVDs through the site -- sort of one-stop shopping.
We're told that while there will be an overall premise to the show, there won't be many "host segments" or the like. And the silhouette won't be of people in theater seats. Instead, it will consist of people up on scaffolding on the side of the screen...as seen in the Cinematic Titanic logo.
The date and title of the first release have yet to be announced, but you can be the first to recieve the news by signing up for the Cinematic Titanic newsletter. Just visit www.cinematictitanic.com for more information.I meant to add that the above details were the quickly-removed-shortly-after-they-were-spilled "beans".

I just wanted to chime in and say how incredibly awesome this is. That is all.

I just hope the downloads are high quality. If they look like YouTube videos, then that would be awful.

I dunno, I just have to think there's something to the timing of all this. No new MST-related / riffing projects from Joel or Jim Mallon in eight years (fifteen years for Joel other than his cameo in '99) and suddenly two happen the same day?
And as for any real inter-collaboration between Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax, I don't see room for any. At least not for much. If I know anything about Joel, they're two different brands of humor. I may be wrong, and it'll be awesome if I am, but Mike's writing style seems a lot more tight and clinical - it's what made MST3k so great for the latter half of its run -- while Joel's style is a little looser and far goofier which shows in seasons K-5 of MST, and really set the tone for the whole show - with the goofy Gizmonic concept and those robot puppets.
Now throw Trace, Josh and Frank in the mix, and you've got a recipe for unhinged wackiness. I know they're not in their 20's anymore, and that may stave off some silliness. Also, I tend to view Mary Jo's sense of humor as more sophisticated and down-to-earth in a way (but then all you have to do is throw on a Pearl Forrester episode and that goes out the window, too).
So it'll be really, really interesting to see what the 'feel' of CinTi will be without Mike's razor sharp wit and Kevin's large, smirky, cynical brand of humor. It really is the two sides of MST3k running parallel, yet seperate from one another at once.

I think the HUGE press that the FilmCrew releases had and the enormous upwelling of fan support for RiffTrax has had something to do with this "rebirth"... but I bet you're right; I think the announcement of one triggered the timing of the announcement of the other.

Maybe they agreed to release them on the same day so it wouldn't look like one party was trying to overshadow the other. However, when I (along with many others) sent an e-mail into Satellite News (as much of an official souce of info that there is) about the CinTi project right after I saw Joel's message on his new site, they responded that they knew it was coming, but they were told that it would be Wednesday - adding that "it never rains, but it pours" which is perhaps the truest thing anyone has said about all of this.

I'm amazed at this sudden flood of news. It's like Turkey Day has come early this year.

I don't know about the timing of the announcements, but I think the success of Rifftrax definitely brought about this resurgence of interest from a lot of the original Brains. Mike has stated in interviews that Rifftrax is doing quite well for itself, at least in terms of units sold, and obviously The Film Crew has been quite well-received in the press (and sold decently, as well). I'm still weirded out by the fact that the Brains have split into three separate camps. I guess when Mike showed that there was still a market for this stuff the others all began to take notice.

I only think of it as two separate camps with Paul temporarily (I hope) left out. And it doesn't seem economically realistic for them to join forces, either. Why cut their profits in half? Especially when, like Bathtub said, the door in between the two projects seems to be open. I'd think they'd enjoy the ability to switch between the different film types too.

Can anyone enlighten me on exactly what transpired at the end of MST3K's run that made Mr. Mallon so universally disliked? And how did he wind up owning the franchise?

Yeah, but that's a good thing. Some fans have begun voicing fears that CinTi may be viewed as Joel Hodgson riding Mike's coattails back into the riffing game. I would remind them that Joel invented the game, and he wouldn't have so many former Brains on board if it were even the least bit unsavory. I give them ALL way more credit than that.
