Yesterday, I had a wonderful chance to catch up on an old childhood favorite of mine: Riders in the Sky! They were playing at a highschool not too far from where I go to church, so I made sure to head on up.
Now, I was a bit apprehensive about it. I mean, these guys aren't as popular as they once were (singing cowboys just aren't very popular these days ), so I was worrying that that'd be reflected in the show. That very much wasn't the case: these guys were on top of their game, and it was a very enjoyable show. They had fun with the fact that they were a relatively unknown band. I think Woody said, "When we went to the grammys a few years back, there was this green room behind the stage for all the big celebrities. Everyone was there. We were the only people in the green room I'd never heard of."
In fact, this is the only concert I've been to since my last Weird Al show (during his Running With Scissors tour) back at the start of the decade where I didn't get bored at some point.I don't know why concerts normally bore me. But this one very much didn't.
Also, consider that this is coming from someone who very much isn't a country music fan. I've never had anything against country music, but it's just something I've never actively enjoyed. On the other hand, though, they kept referring to it as "Western" music instead of country, so maybe that subtle difference is what it takes for me to enjoy it.
At the end of the show, they were kind enough to wait around to meet the audience members and sign autographs. I made sure to buy a badge declaring me an official Saddle Pal.
Anyway, thanks for humoring me. It was just so much fun to see these guys again. I've been hearing more and more from 'em ever since they did the Woody's Roundup song in Toy Story 2.
