I have been reading a very interesting book called HAMLET'S MILL. It deals with the transmission of human knowledge through myth. Well wasn't I psyched when I came upon THE SAMPO. Too much text to type- so go to this link and type "SAMPO" into the SEARCH BOX. www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0879232153/ref=sib_dp_ptu#reader-link Interesting stuff!

The "Sampo adventure" sounds pretty neat, but I discovered the truth to be far more prosaic last summer:

I offer another, more sinister Sampo. A "Large Rod Butt Rest" Sampo.

I have to say "a large rod butt rest" sounds absolutely immoral. Where can I get one?

Geez.
Took me a moment to extract my mind from the gutter and realize just what that "large rod butt rest" was actually used for.

But seriously- if any of you REALLY want to see the literary/historical meaning of SAMPO- check out the link I posted.

Why would we want to know what it really means? It's much more fun to make stuff up.

Heh, you're both right! To me, it's actually kind of a geeky cool thing to find out about the history of the whole Sampo epic. It's an eye-opener when you find out the old guy who plays the kantale was, in some versions, a much younger man who actually competed with the Lemon-Limon dude for girls. And that the evil witch Loukhi was, in some versions, similar to sexy sorceresses like Circe or Calypso in The Odyssey--tempting the heroes to forget their quest and all.
