The question came up in an article in the British film mag Empire when they decided to cover both films for the simple reason that they share the same release date in 1984 (it may be the British one and not the North American). So it's something I've asked pretty much everyone I know. Just thought I'd ask you lot.

Gotta go with Ghostbusters, even though I liked Gremlins when it came out. Haven't seen it in years, though.

I view these two films as different genres.
Ghostbusters, because of the cast, script and direction, was basically "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" blowed up real big.
Gremlins was a serious fantasy with humor that introduced a whole new mythos, if you will: gremlins.
Both are fun, I like them equally. But as a film, I think Gremlins is the better of the two.

I can't stand Gremlins. I also hate The Goonies. Feel free to ostracize me completely.
Every one of my peers responds to these two statements with: "YOU DIDN"T LIEK GREMLINZ!?!? AND GOONIEEZ! WAT IZ RONG WIFF U?!?!?"
I'll tell you what's wrong with me. I never saw these when I was three years old. All of the stuff that's supposed to be endearing and cutsey is annoying as Hell to me. When I was younger, the fare was Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Pretty in Pink, Dirty Dancing, Beaches (later on), Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Star Wars.
Also, I couldn't stand Labyrinth.

Let's see... one movie had a treasure trove of one-liners, grade-A comedians, great special effects, and a giant marshmallow man. The other movie had furry puppets. Not really a fair fight. Even if Gremlins was a good movie, it would still lose because Ghostbusters has this:

You like Rick Moranis, don't you Mr A?
I go with Ghostbusters. I loved that movie, and it's still fun this many years later. ;D

Neither is a favorite film, but "Ghostbusters" has some pretty funny moments.

Oh gee....let me think...
Ghostbusters is my favorite movie of all time.
Gremlins is a movie I despise with a passion.
Which one to choose? I think Mr. A hit the nail dead on the head.

You like Rick Moranis, don't you Mr A? It's not just Rick Moranis. It's Rick Moranis with a colander on his head. It's Rick Moranis saying things like, "Gozer the Traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I am going to have to go with Ghostbusters. It is the first film I ever had a "crush" on (that's how I like to put it, there have been many).
I made my parents buy me the VHS when I wore out the dub I had from cable (the first legit VHS I ever owned, with a box and everything, was a milestone in my life). Love the great Richard Edlund gags, and Bill Murray is perhaps my favorite actor of all time, top five at least. I owned all the action figures from the cartoon, and even had my very own toy proton pack! I know the movie by heart and still enjoy it to this day, and I also like the sequel (slightly less, or course).
I must say, I do like Gremlins, though. I enjoy Joe Dante, and I like the maniacal sense of humor the film provides. Not to mention some great, vintage mechanical effects. But the film did help spawn the PG-13 rating, and I have mixed feelings on that subject to say the least.

Funnily enough I think Chuck is the first person anywhere that I've asked that has said Gremlins. I love both, but Ghostbusters is my favourite of the two. As I said, the question only arose because both came out on the same day. What was most interesting about the article are the similarities between the two series, mainly great first part, flawed but fun second part and a third part that has been considered but for whatever reason can't get off the ground.
And Rick Moranis with a colander on his head is pretty damn great!

Yeah, that was pretty great. ;D I still have old Ghostbusters toys, because my son was into the GB when he was a child (he's 22 now). So I still have the toy hearse, and it has an awesome winch.

Ghostbusters in a no contest win. The biggest problem with Gremlins is that Zach Galligan {and yes, I had to look that up} can not carry a movie. Try to imagine Gremlins if it had some one like John Cusack in the lead loser role. It would be good for the movie if the lead isn't outperformed by a puppet voiced by Howie Mandel.
Here's something from IMDB {I don't know if it's true or not but it sounds relevant here}: Originally planned and scheduled for a Christmas release, the film was rushed into production shortly after Warner Bros. found out that it had no major competition against Paramount's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) or Columbia's Ghost Busters (1984) for the summer movie season.
Instant competition! Just add water...

I have to go against the masses on this one. Gremlins was one of the first movies my pops ever took me to see as a kid ( I was 4) and it just always has a special place in my heart. And even though the cast wasn't as big name as the cast of Ghostbusters, they did a superb job. The storyline to me was also a little bit easier to follow which, as a kid, I had a great appreciation of.
So, Gremlins for me, if only for nostalgia purposes.
