Ghostbusters is awesome, but I've got to go with Gremlins here.
Want a reason? OK: the lady on the stair lift flying up the stairs and out the window. Gets me every time.

This thread is all wrong! Ghostbusters has its moments but as Eddy put it in Ed Wood, "It's not the little details but the big picture". Ghostbusters feels so one-dimensional and even dated when compared to the manic satire of Gremlins. Dante made a campy but hardly forced mockery of commercial America taking over small town wholesomeness, for the better but mostly for the worse, with the father buying the adorable Gizmo as a possible consumer interest and seeing the terrible consequences of how commercialism can tear apart and de-friendly what was a near-pastoral society. Of course, it is all grossly exagerrated by being a horror-comic romp but also one with perfect art direction (Chinatown is just drool-worthy and the town design is smashing), hilarious puppetry, and a believable (not exceptional) lead actor who - while no Bill Murray - captured the ambitions and overwhelming responsibility of a talented, young achiever. This B-movie with juice makes the viewers consider what's the right balance between comfy simplicity and consumer fun, because they can both get rather tiresome and frustrating. It helps the movie's themes all the more that the film is placed during Christmas yet doesn't feel overtly seasoned like overrated junk in the like of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation or even Home Alone (Columbus is the devil with a John Williams invisibility cloak). Ghostbusters, on the other hand, is just a couple of guys capturing ghosts. With vacuums. It sometimes feels more corny than campy and less timeless than Gremlins. It's all a matter of opinion and how you grew up, however. EDIT: Yikes. Sorry about the bump.

Both movies are fantastic! i loved them as a kid back in the 80's and still admire them. I even loved "Gremlins 2" which was underrated and far better then the "Gremlins" rip-offs like "Ghoulies", "Munchies", "Evil Toons", and the worst one of them all "Hobgoblins" except for "Critters 1 & 2" which were both fun movies in their own right.

You like Rick Moranis, don't you Mr A? It's not just Rick Moranis. It's Rick Moranis with a colander on his head. It's Rick Moranis saying things like, "Gozer the Traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!" Mr. A, please tell me that you know this paragraph by heart, that you can recite it without hesitation...because that would rock.

I love both movies, the point of the thread was that a magazine in the UK done a feature on both because they shared a release date in 1984, possibly only in the UK, and asked which were you, a Gremlins or a Ghostbusters person. It's really just about nostalgia. As I said I love both and concede Gremlins to be the deeper, more meaningful film, trust me I get it. i just prefer Ghostbusters, no matter how "empty" it may be!

I like them both a good deal, its pretty much a coin flip.
Both have great theme songs too.

Gremlins had a theme song? Well, considering I don't remember it, it appears to be less memorable than the great Ghostbusters theme by Ray Parker, Jr. "I ain't afraid of no ghost!"

The Gremlins theme tune is indeed a great one:

Man I've ignored this thread because for me, it's not even up for discussion. But since it keeps popping back up. Let me see, I find Gremlins to be complete and utter CRAP! So, who, who should I pick. WHO?

Ghostbusters still holds up 25 years later. I could watch it anytime, anywhere.
Gremlins has not held up well at all. Tough for me to get through.
